"Faith in Action" will pay $300/day fine for 10 Commandments 'garden'
(Note: Are the Ten Commandments WRITTEN IN ENGLISH (!) a travesty? After all, our National Anthem was not written in Spanish!) :sarcasm:

====
Organization to Keep a Garden Display of the Ten Commandments Despite Threat of a Three Hundred Dollar a Day Fine and Loss of Property by Washington, D.C. Officials
To: National Desk

Contact: Rev. Patrick J. Mahoney, for Faith and Action, 202-547-1735, 540.538.4741 cell

WASHINGTON, June 13 /Christian Newswire/ -- Faith and Action will not remove the Ten Commandments which are located on Capitol Hill right across the street from the United States Supreme Court. ( See photo of the display.)

This is the only publicly displayed Ten Commandments in the nation’s Capitol with the full text of the Commandments written in English.

The group says the only reason the District of Columbia is targeting them for fines and loss of property is because of the religious nature of the display.

Rev. Patrick J. Mahoney, Director of the Christian Defense Coalition, and spokesperson for the project states, “It is clear the only reason the City of Washington, D.C. has sent a compliance letter seeking fines and loss of property is because of the religious nature of this display. We have talked with many of our Capitol Hill neighbors who have set up garden displays, without permits, who have not received this kind of harassment and intimidation from the City. We want to make it clear to District of Columbia City officials that we will use every resource and tool available to see this display is not removed and fight against this religious bigotry."

Rev. Rob Schenck, President of Faith and Action, comments, “This beautiful display serves as a powerful reminder of the eternal truths that God handed down in the Ten Commandments. It is my hope and prayer that all who view it will be inspired to work for a society in which all are treated with justice and equality. It is very troubling that the City of Washington, D.C. is wasting tax dollars to harass this ministry for simply putting up a garden display of the Ten Commandments.”

1. I always thought the first commandment was a little suspicious, myself...
"thou shalt not have any other gods before me..." Doesn't this suggest that there ARE other gods?

Just asking.

10. Yeah, those first 4 are the problematic ones
or the first 3, if you were raised on the Douay bible.

Saw off the top of that thing and just display the last 6, nobody would mind much.

Why do these loons never think of posting the Beatitudes? Too Christian?

11. Check out the actual wording of Commandment No. 1. It's even stranger.

From the internets ---

The following is the text of the commonly accepted (by Christian and Jewish authorities) commandments as found in the book of Exodus:

"God spoke all these words, saying: I am the Lord your God,who brought you out of Egypt, from the place of slavery. Do not have any other gods before Me."

From a people who believe in one God, monotheism, God has to use the words, " who brought you out of Egypt", to identify Himself.

12. A lot of people think the answer to that is YES.
In fact, a lot of archaeology supports the belief that the early Hebrews weren't actually monotheistic. They didn't believe that there was only one God, only that there was just one God that mattered. The Hebrews may have believed, for example, that the Egyptian gods existed while they were in Egypt. They didn't worship them, because that would have been blasphemous, but it's quite possible that they DID believe that they were real. They were simply inferior to their "One True God". The Israelites had their "One God", while everyone else worshipped lesser gods (and, of course, were all going to hell as a result).

The belief that there is ONLY one God and that the others are nonexistent fairy tales came a bit later.

22. In all the years I've been here, you're the first to catch that.
Xi = Ancient Greek symbol for Christ.
Mithras = Ancient Greek God who's life on Earth was uncannily like that of Christ.

Xithras = Merging of the two, symbolizing the belief that the legends of one borrowed heavily from the other. The cult of Xi borrowed many of its early legends from the cult of Mithras, and many "Christian" beliefs are actually echoes of ancient Mithraism. Even Christmas, the traditional birthday of Mithras, was borrowed...legend had him being born on December 25th.

Good eye :)

17. No...
whatever else you think of Judaism, there is no hell. Heaven isn't very clearly defined either.

At worst (and its somewhat traditional speculation), there is a purgatory where you live for up to 12 months before going onward to whatever Heaven is. If your so evil (Hitler) that you can't be reformed, your soul is simply destroyed.

19. The hell thing was meant as a bit of a joke.
Sorry, I can't wait for somebody to invent a sarcasm generator for the Internet...it doesn't transmit too well via text :\

Yes, I'm aware that Judaism doesn't have a fire and brimstone hell. What was meant was that believers "don't go to a place as nice as ours". Whether that place is hell, purgatory, or oblivion isn't all that important.

and apparently it violates zoning or some such laws. If DC is arbitrarily enforcing laws then they have a legit beef.

4. I recall an old West Wing Episode
when President Bartlett entered the room to straighten everybody out about what the first commandment was and then he proceeded kick fundie ass. (the episode where Josh said a fundies god was being indicted on tax fraud.)

As Mr Colbert said the ten commandments were written in english so they could be taught in our public schools.

21. I was raised SDA and went to church on Sat.
I hated this commandment most of all because that meant no Saturday morning cartoons for me.

That's one of the main reasons I'm an atheist now. That, and the fact that quit believing in fairy tales a long time ago.

24. I believe that SDA blamed the Catholics for changing the Sabbath
Day.
And I have read that the Catholics have somewhat acknowledged their ability to change the meaning of passages in the Scriptures through their claim as the first Christian church.
One big happy family.
