...not a "reality-based" one. :-(
As in What's the Matter With Kansas?, Americans increasingly make their political choices based on values rather than issues -- and the Republicans have managed to convince far too many that "Republican values are American values." These people, having emotionally committed themselves to Bush and the Republicans, don't want to recognize what's going on. Sure, if news gets bad enough for long enough, they'll have to question and maybe even turn against their leaders -- but, in doing so, they're also questioning their own judgement in committing themselves to those leaders, and most people can't stand that. So, all it takes is a smidgen or two of good news, and they'll seize upon it as "proof" that their earlier faith was not misplaced, and rush back to their allegiance with renewed fervor.
It's kind of like a woman whose husband is cheating on her. She may deny it for as long as possible, until enough evidence piles up that she can no longer ignore it. But then, all too often, all her husband has to do is throw some crumbs of affection her way for her to forget her suspicions. "Look, he bought me roses," she may exclaim, "that proves that he really loves me...how could I have been so blind as to doubt him?"
