They're unionizing in my building Today!
Well, not quite yet. There's a Q&A going on with our local CWA, and few reps in a different dept. who are not unionized. We have a bout 300 members in the building and a few months ago, another 250 non-union workers moved from another office to ours. We've been schmoozing them for a couple of months now (free burgers, Pepsi etc.). I just dropped by our cafeteria, and a good size group of them are talking to our organizer. Good sign!

I wasn't invited to come along, I guess cuz I can't keep my mouth shut. Actually my position is more on the legislative/lobbying side of CWA. I find overtime discrepencies, workload fairness, and letters of tardies to be colossally BORING! More of a big picture guy, me.:D

2. Good luck!
Good luck! As for me living in Texas, getting into a Union job is more a pipe dream than a practical goal, but it's always a hope....

3. Okie-dokey, I guess I started a firestorm of a thread here.
...so let me give an update. It was an assurance meeting, and a unionization meeting. 13 people signed on to the log (no card check yet), but 15 showed up. We have a permanent organizer that CWA district 7 is providing for us. They seem pretty receptive so far. We need 50% + 1 and we'll have 150 or so new members! I said about 250, that's wrong. There's only about 150, which means 76 need to vote for the union. Most of these workers are in their 20s, and are enthusiastic about it. Us old farts in the union would like to see some new blood anyway!

Job security is their major concerns. Under our contract, we in the union cannot be laid off unless another position in the company is offered (even if it's in Traverse City Michigan, Yuma Arizona or Nome Alaska). If we refuse, then we're gone, so there's that. Salary discrepencies, abrupt layoffs and messing around with severance pay are other concerns.

I soon forget how good I have it. My severance is set in stone, if laid off, I'm still on the payroll for 60 more days. They can't declare any change to my medical benefits without negotiating first.
