both just got ours. He got out in '70 I retired in 1988. These aren't VA records, he never filed with the VA, these are all records of enlistments.

I was discharged in 1986 and got my letter the other day.

About the veteran status, I thought just being discharged from the military made you eligible for VA and other veteran's benefits. My brother is a "veteran" despite only 2.5 yrs in the Marines, and no war action of any kind.

5. THE RULES ARE DIFFERENT FOR NATIONAL GUARD
Edited on Wed Jun-14-06 05:51 PM by banana republican
At least when I was in. There was a 6 month rule if you served less than 6 months active duty you did not qualify. Most people were discharged with less than that. If I am entitled to those benefits then I am more than pissed.

3. You are a vet if you ever served in uniform.
Even if all you did was polish the general's car.

I'm starting to think this breach is bigger than they've acknowledged, though.

12. BEEN THERE DONE THAT
I declared Bankruptcy in 1987 following my wife's death, medical bills and an asshole republican land lord.

I have no desire to repeat that. My credibility is all that I have.

13. If you served during the Vietnam conflict you are a Vietnam era
vet. Not to be confused with a Vietnam vet. I'm an era vet. I never served in country but I'm still a vet and got full benefits of the GI bill. Check with the VA and see what benefits you may have. You served, you put yourself in a position to be sent anywhere in the world at any time. You earned any benefits you have coming.

Thanks for the service.

24. IRS???
Edited on Wed Jun-14-06 07:04 PM by banana republican
Why are they involved in this????

they are very regulated. & should not have ANY information and are preclued by law from releasing any.

unless the VA is using their database to locate people.

Which reminds me HOW THE HELL did they know where I live????

send the notices. It's in the small print there on the letter.

26. Just curious.
My husband was a 100% service connected disabled veteran who died in 1990. He was medically discharged in the 80's. Since they are saying now that the wifes have info stolen also, would that be something I should worry about. Or does this only include living veterans?

Has anyone heard from any widows getting letters?

30. a co-worker who is retired Army....got her letter...that raised her
awareness level about her finances and she checked her bank statement online today..someone had printed credit union checks using her account number but a different name/address and phone...and bought a $2,000.00 item at Best Buy and spent 68.00 at WAWA..probably filled up his stolen SUV too....co-incidence? maybe... or maybe her VA info was the source....

luckily she checked her account before all the checks she had written bounced...the money was put back in her account but with a new account number...what could have been a disaster...turned out to be more of a nusiance....hopefully...it's over.

I am a ex-wife of a retired Navy man...and will be checking my accounts regularly.
