ATRIOS: The Laziest Blogger In All the Netroots?
Edited on Thu Jun-15-06 02:32 AM by Placebo
I've always noticed that his posts usually consists of a mere few words and a link to another article, or a sentence at most; sometimes it's just a couple words with no link to anything.

But an analysis conducted by my friend and I reveal that his word output is simply paltry.

Taking the most recent 40 posts @ Eschaton, when titles, quotes, block quotes, and the 5 most lengthy posts are all eliminated, Atrios averages only 19 words per post.

Include those 5, and it brings the average to only 28 words per post.

How can such a popular blog be so empty? Shouldn't we be expecting more from one of the Titans of the Netroots?

1. Don't know if "lazy" is the word I'd use...
... but it seems to me that over time he's become somewhat more of a DISTRIBUTOR of information/opinion than a PRODUCER.

You can look at that optimistically, from the perspective of: what a compliment to progressives in general, that there are so many good sources of information/opinion that it doesn't all have to rest on the shoulders of the Atrioi of the world.

Or you could just say "what a lazy schmuck".

People can differ on that, I suppose.

2. I appreciate the lack of verbiage myself
Too many words can get in the way unless you are going for eloquent poetry.

Most writing instructors will give an assignment, then tell you to go back and remove all the words you can without losing the meaning.

Most people don't have the attention span to read long posts.

3. unbelievable
isn't that like insulting to your readers that you care so little about them to say what you actually think? I think my post right now exceeds 30 of his posts on his front page in terms of overall length.

4. Well, I have to admit that I don't read ATRIOS
but perhaps he has read White & Strunk. I wish more bloggers would read "The Elements of Style". I think the Plaid Adder does a fine job of making observations readable and enjoyable while making her points.

6. So why do you go to his site?
If you don't find the content helpful to you?

Some people may go to Atrios BECAUSE he is brief, but does stay on top of things. Not all of us have the luxury of spending hours and hours sifting through the blogs to read a bunch of long winded posts, ya know.

All blogs do not have to follow exactly the same format - jeez.

8. Nonsense
In addition to the refutations above, please note that Instapundit makes Atrios look like Charles Dickens.

(Although I will admit that the reason I tend to turn to Atrios first thing in the morning is that he has nearly everything else I want to look at on his blogroll. But I also appreciate his sense of what's appropriate and his flavor of snark.)

9. Editing, selecting which links and excerpts, can be hard work
AND informative, honing a point.
