Give up? Make me.
This little rant is not DIRECTED at any of our fellow DUers,
although it was INSPIRED by one.
It is intended as a general response to ANYONE and EVERYONE
who has succumbed to despair, or fear, or even simple fatigue...
and has proposed that we take the easy road: give up, give in and sell out.

As bad as things are going to get here, (and they _ARE_ going to get bad)
BILLIONS of people throughout history, MOST of them, actually...
have survived worse.

Much, much WORSE.

Considering the historical "human condition" as a whole,
a full-blown B*sh DICTATORSHIP would need a few generations
to actually drag us peasants down near the AVERAGE.

And I don't need to look to any ANCIENT history
to make my point. Modern history serves my purpose.

Just off the top of my head:

*1: My friend Peter's folks lived in a small town in China
during the "Cultural Revolution". To this day, even after
35 years in the USA, they will NOT say a bad word about Mao.

They saw firsthand what happened to people who DID...
and what happened to people who were suspected of being related to someone
who once lived 2 doors down from someone who did...

*2: Back in '85, when I got my first job at the shoe factory,
my supervisor "Jake" was a little old Polish dude.
He had a funny crooked walk, a twitchy, perpetually-itchy nose...
and a serial number tattoo'd on his inside forearm.
None of which he had been born with, or asked for.

*3: My friend Mi's dad had a gift for languages, and when he had
a chance in 1964 to use that gift to lift his family out
of their mud-hut poverty in China, he took it:
working as a translator for the CIA in Vietnam.
Guess how "fun" their life was after '75?

And there are many other millions of people alive today
who experienced the same or worse.
And damn few of them EVER had the time, or tools, or skills
which the average American has at their disposal.
Those millions of people are alive today,
with screaming hordes of snotnosed grandchildren
getting their nice things all grubbed-up every damn weekend,
because THEY DIDN'T GIVE UP.

And, even knowing all that, some of you tell _ME_ to 'give up'?
You tell _US_, the American Liberals,
the people whose ideas and IDEALS turned a backwater assortment
of peasants, cultists, and petty criminals into the mightiest NATION
the world has ever known in just a few short generations...

You are telling US to 'give up'?
And, not just 'give up, but give up to the REPUBLICANS?

Seriously, c'mon now: not the Nazis, not the USSR, not the Black Death
or Global warming...the Republicans?

THESE Republicans?

To DUBYA, fer Chrissakes?

Are you ACTUALLY telling me to 'give up' to this
pathetically halfassed cabal of soft, spoiled, FratBoy wannabe fascists,
whose coke-delerium-inspired '4th Reich' fantasies are perpetually
being kneecapped by their unfettered greed and KeystoneInkompetence?

"Give up" to these STUPID, TRANSPARENT, ideology-less, 2D spin-twisters
whose juvenile pipe-dream 'final solution global empire' ramblings
will never even get ON the goddamn drawing board because one
of them STOLE the drawing board and traded it for CRACK after their first meeting;
and who, even totalled as a group, don't possess
the 2 SECONDS worth of self-control necessary
to stop looting their own "Jackboot and BarbWire Fund" for
limo rides to hooker-parties at the Watergate?

THESE are the idiots you tell me to 'give up' to?

Sorry, friend, but I don't hardly fucking think so.

B*sh and Co are a fly that has hypnotized us into
thinking they are an elephant.

We need to snap out of our trance, and remember where
we put the flyswatter.

7. Who said we are giving up.

F*ck that.

The repukes has a "good" week... but only with the following "news"...

1. A congressional district that's about as red as you can get (just because it's California, that doesn't mean shit, remember that my state gave you the John Birch society and Ronald Reagan) seems to have elected a Repuke, by a narrow margin for that district. And the Dem candidate might have won except for some ill advised remarks to a mostly hispanic crowd which was taken out of context and used against her in the week before the election.

My reaction... yawn. It don't mean a thing. I'm glad in some ways, I want the repukes to be a bit overconfident.

2. We killed a terrorist in Iraq. Or possibly pulled his body out of a refrigerator. Or something. Probably AFTER Al Qaeda instructed that information leading to his death be given to the US government.

My reaction... good. We should have killed him months or years ago. And it doesn't change any of the facts about Iraq.

3. Bush flies to Iraq and visits for a few hours

My reaction... Americans, all of us including conservatives and freepers, have seen this before and recognize it for the stage craft that it is and we DISCOUNT it now. What sticks with me is the pictures and stories of the secret flight... one story that was on the MSM was that Air Force One had to take off with almost NO fuel on board so it could climb quickly out of Iraq, and was refueled early in the return flight. Things are certainly getting better in Iraq! :sarcasm:

4. Rove not indicted.

My reaction... again, so what. Rove is NOT a political genuis... he appeals to peoples baser emotions (fear, hatred, greed). We need to appeal to higher emotions (while negating the appeal of the right to the baser ones). Yeah, Rove is an evil bastard, but he is just one of many in the BFEE. Given the control that the right currently has on the MSM, the congress, the higher courts, and the federal government, why should anyone here be surprised that "they get away with it". It's a surprise when they DON'T.

So that's their big week?

I'm giving money (and time) to Dems where and when I can, and everyone else should too. We can beat them at the ballot box, even when they hack the vote... all we have to do is make it not that close. If we win a race by 10 points or more (which is a high bar to reach but doable even in "red" states) they can't steal the election.

17. And while we are doing that reassessment of the enemy ...
...I think it's important to take a moment
and remember who _WE_ are.

WE are not people who roll over when the going gets tough,
and we are NOT people who put up with this sort of nonsense
indefinitely.
We just need to remember that.

16. Word.
I just hope that folks in the US of A smarten up more quickly than some of our predecessors so that we don't have to go through a "Cultural Revolution" to look back and see how nice we had it. Let's nip it in the bud. What's that old saying about those who ignore history being doomed to repeat it?

It's time for sedition. Although it's not really sedition, as I dispute completely that our current government is "lawful".

18. It's not 'sedition' when the power being resisted is UNLAWFUL.
And B*shCabal™ is nothing if not unlawful.

They break the law,
they ignore the law,
they lie about what the law says,
and they claim they have the right to just pull new laws
out of their ass whenever it suits them.

And they make NO secret that they do all these things.

And BTW- Welcome to DU! :hi:

24. I wish I could say the same.
But the truth is: until a few years ago my entire political
philosophy consisted of "Bah! They're all crooks."

My sweetie made the statement a year or two ago that
she had 'turned me into a liberal'.
But that wasn't true. I was ALWAYS a 'liberal', but I had just never
actually realized that I was one, because I hadn't ever thought about it.

So I am the same as I ever was. I never "became" liberal,
I became POLITICAL.

And I don't mean to minimize that "becoming";
it was a veritable cross-country MOVE.

And I told my sweetie that she didn't FORCE my move,
she assisted it.
She kindly offered her expert advice on how to pack the boxes,
but B*shCabal™ did most of the heavy lifting.

29. As long as you made the trip
from the dark side and came to the light? All is good!! :)

I became political during the Vietnam War and as soon as I got the right to vote at the age of 18!
Actually I helped organize peace demonstrations and walk-out moratoriums at my high school!
All that was in the same time frame. I was watching all my high school friends, family, neighbors
being drafted and it was just overwhelming. It, that war, was breaking my heart and I couldn't be silent!
I grew up in the Boston area, and everything was politics, it seems. It was discussed at
the dinner table very night at my house and there were a lot of fights and arguments over the war.
My older brother's and sister's were all in college and being drafted, so I was immersed quite young!
I guess it took! ;) I loved my political science class in college too!
I think I'll always follow politics or be involved one way or another! I think being 'liberal' just came naturally to me,
with a lot of examples and education from my older sisters, for sure! (The Equal Rights Amendment)
I remember that bumper sticker; "Question Authority!", and I was still young enough that I
thought it pertained to 'just my parents" ;) but when I got older? I realized it had a whole new meaning! :)

Not that I'm complaining- a kick is a kick, by any other smell.

And I fully support the PLAN you cut-n-pasted;
it's a simple plan, and a good one, as far as rough outlines go.

Just bear in mind that times are gonna get REALLY interesting
between the "after that" and "finally" stages of that particular plan.
