Former GOP senator Weicker to hold Lamont fundraiser

By Susan Haigh, AP Political Writer | June 13, 2006

HARTFORD, Conn. --Former Gov. Lowell Weicker is helping to throw a fundraiser later this month for Ned Lamont, the Greenwich businessman challenging U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman in an August Democratic primary.

Weicker, a former Republican who lost his U.S. Senate seat to Lieberman in 1988, is being billed as an honorary chairman, along with his wife Claudia. Suggested contributions to the June 18 event in Chester range from $100 to $1,000.

Weicker said six months ago that he would consider challenging Lieberman if a credible anti-war candidate did not step forward.

Lamont "is 100 percent opposed to the war in Iraq and so am I," said Weicker, who is now registered as an unaffiliated voter. His wife is a Democrat. "I want him to be the next United States senator from Connecticut."

2. This is pretty terrific
Weicker, of course, lost to Lieberman when Joementum smeared him non-stop as "too liberal for Connecticut," which told you all you needed to know about Holy Joe. I still have a signed thank-you letter from Lowell for working on his campaign. He was the last Republican I ever voted for and there are a lot of people in Conn. who remember him fondly.

From what I can see in Conn., Lieberman is in trouble. It's going to be a low turnout election there, and motivated voters can swing the primary. If the polls are even close, Lieberman will lose.
