2,500 - SNOW: "It's a number."
From the briefing today ...

QUESTION: Tony, American deaths in Iraq have reached 2,500. Is there any response or reaction from the President on that?

SNOW: It's a number. And every time there's one of these 500 benchmarks, people want something.

The president would like the war to be over now. Everybody would like the war to be over now. And the one thing that we saw in Iraq this week is further testimony to the quality of the men and the women who are doing that, and the dedication and determination to try to ensure that the people of Iraq really do live in a free, effective democracy of their own creation and design.

Any president who goes through a time of war feels very deeply the responsibility for sending men and women into harm's way and feels very deeply the pain that the families feel. And this president is no different.

You've seen it many times. You saw it. You saw it when he was in that ballroom. You had this crowd of service men and women who were cheering loudly for the president, and he got choked up.

So it's always a sad benchmark.

6. He feels deeply. Oh, really. Let's revisit this story:
Bush to dead soldier's mom: "How do you know his life would have been good?"

VIDEO INTERVEIW WITH Dolores Kesterson

By Jeff Norman
August 11, 2005
Cindy Sheehan is not the only Gold Star mom who felt disrespected after a visit with George W. Bush. Dolores Kesterson, whose son Erik was killed in Iraq in November of 2003, was among several military families who last year were invited to meet with Bush as a group. Each family was allotted ten minutes with the president, but because she is divorced from her husband, Dolores asked to speak with Bush one-on-one.

Dolores reports exclusively for U.S. Tour of Duty that she waited alone in a small partitioned area, wondering if her request would be granted, before a Bush aide suddenly announced, "The president will now see you." As the commander in chief strode briskly toward her, it seemed to Dolores that he was trying to intimidate her. "He came marching in and got right in my face...eyeball to eyeball, and said, 'I'm George Bush, the president of the United States, and I understand you have something to say to me in private.'"

Dolores tried to give Bush a sense of what type of person Erik had been. She described her son as a "comedian" whose favorite saying was, "Life is good." The president replied, "How do you know his life would have been good?"

Dolores was shocked by Bush's eagerness to question the value of her son's life. She told the president, "Nobody wants to die."

Before he concluded their meeting, Bush proclaimed to Dolores, "We won't know in our lifetime whether or not Iraq was a success."

30. Re-post from last summer:
George W. Bush to Cindy Sheehan:

I have to get on with my life.

Abraham Lincoln to Lydia Bixby:

Dear Madam,

I have been shown in the files of the War Department a statement of the Adjutant General of Massachusetts that you are the mother of five sons who have died gloriously on the field of battle.

I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save.

I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.

Yours, very sincerely and respectfully,

A. Lincoln

104. Oh no, NOT the Bixby letter
Edited on Fri Jun-16-06 05:30 AM by Scairp
It's widely accepted that this letter is a forgery, and not only did this "Mrs. Bixby" NOT lose five sons in the Civil War, she hated Lincoln and was a Southern sympathizer, and perhaps a madam to boot. She may have had five sons, but they didn't all die in the war. The letter was almost certainly not written by Lincoln.

you lying, disgusting piece of garbage! Not only is each death a benchmark, it represents another person who will not see family and friends again. It's another father, mother, sister, brother, best friend, cousin, significant other who will be grieved by another family over an illegal war your boss brought about.

15. Not enough Americans have been killed.
apparantly the indifferent, distracted American people are willing to accept a slow gradual death and wounded count when it comes to Iraq, as long as it isn't their kid or the Jones' living next door.

For people to be in the streets, it's going to take a lot more people being killed.

And forget about Iraqis. They don't even register on the radar screen.

Is it any wonder why the United States is hated?

60. There's another politcal forum where I'm a regular,
a mixed forum. Sometimes I ask the freepers: "What is your number? What is the highest number of American dead in Iraq that is acceptable to you? At what point will you decide the cost in lives is too high? 3000? 5000? More than that?"

So far I haven't gotten an answer, but I'm going to keep asking anyway.

That * got choked up says nothing at all about his feelings for the troops he has sent into harm's way. And judging by his actions (what people do counts what they say means nothing)in cutting the VA budget, having no clear plan to get the guys out of there except waiting for the next president to do the job so he won't take the blame and not even going to one funeral - he doesn't give a shit.

Doesn't Snowjob see the incredible irony of that statement?

My heart bleeds for poor Boobya standing in a ballroom and "feels very deeply the pain that the families feel."

One of the things that decided me to tell the Marine Corps to shove it when they asked me to extend my enlistment to go to Vietnam was the thought of rich politicians having the power to send me to kill people I didn't know, had nothing against, and sympathized with, and risk my life, so they could look "tough on Communism" and boo-hoo over my grave.

A fucking ballroom fer Chrissakes!

44. "...and feels very deeply the pain that the families feel."
So basically, Bush "feels" their pain.
I remember another President who had said something similar about feeling other's pain and was mocked severely by the right-wing and their loud mouthed pundits. Where is that mocking now with this president? Especially based on the fact that this president was talking about the pain of the loss of two thousand, five hundred human beings.

I'm glad I'm a bleeding heart liberal. In my book it beats the hell out of being a heartless, right-wing mass murderer.

Edited on Thu Jun-15-06 02:16 PM by mwooldri
You could just add non-US military personnel. Since they're apparently large in number over there it is probably safe to assume that there are a number of non military US people out there who have died. I'm sorry I don't have numbers but my guess is that US citizens who have died in Iraq is probably close to (if not over) the 3,000 mark already.

Mark.

88. Memorize it
QUESTION: Tony, American deaths in Iraq have reached 2,500. Is there any response or reaction from the President on that?

SNOW: It's a number. And every time there's one of these 500 benchmarks, people want something.

DU homework: Memorize the above question and quote. Repeat it to family, friends, co-workers and anyone who will listen. Type it up, print it out and stick it on your refrigerator door. For extra credit, make it into a text graphic and transfer it to a tee-shirt - Suggested placement: Question on front. Answer on back.

This is a deadly quote. The spokesman for the president just told those hero's families that their grief is nothing more than a statistical total. He just revealed to everyone that when the president says he cares about putting soldier's lives on the line, he's lying. This sorry excuse for a human being is the voice of * /SNOW says it = The president says it.

I saw the thing as it played out in that ballroom and from what was being said by bush, at the time that he was about to break into a sobbing fit, he appeared to be feeling more sorry for himself, than anyone else on the planet, dead, or alive.

I don't think Bush REALLY cares about anyone but Bush, ever. I thought and thought about the sob scene afterward and it looked like Bush was throwing himself a childish pity party.

So is 150,000. The number of Troops still in Iraq.
http://www.mindfully.org/Reform/2006/US-2006-Military-Cost4jan2006.htm

So is 18,356. The number of US servicemen wounded in Iraq.
http://icasualties.org/oif/

So is 38,355. The number of Iraqis killed in the war (lowball count)

How cold and heartless these people are toward actual people. Even people that they sent to a war of choice are a bunch of "numbers" to them. I'm sure that the 10,000+ permanently injured and 20,000+ total casualties are all just numbers to them - in the same way they the MILLIONS of americans who have slipped into poverty on Bush's watch are all just numbers. The American people are just pawns in a game for the crypto-fascist neo-cons, not flesh and blood families of husbands, wives, sons and daughters who are being killed or going to bed day after day hungrier than the day before.

They should all be tried for criminal negligence, not to mention war crimes.

family forever changed ,and not in a positive way .A life lost may be just another number to this shallow excuse for a human being ,however I see it as another life cut short ,for a war that never had to be ,and mark my words more lives both miltary and inocent will be lost .I also believe because of our poor excuse for a president that our contry is much more likley then ever to be attacked again anytime. We have helped actually rasied the rankes of our enemies cause , made them appear as them having a more justified reason to fight us as we occupy thier land and abuse thier people ! The Iraquies did ot atack us on 9/11 ,yet they continue like a child caught in a lie to deny this fact. The whole thing is like a bad movie that gets worst as it continues. Here we have a president that did everything to avoid what he is sending thousands of others to do fight in a war thats not a good cause and thats real reason is control of the oil for his rich backers and our real president dick chenney. bush the pupet president will go down as the worst of the worst ,and will hopefully hold that record for the rest of the U.S.A.'s history !

I've become so jaded with the news that I simply refuse to watch it, so I missed the Snow comment. But I hope that he gets a boatload of hatemail for it. I have family in the military and I'd be irate if they died and were referred to so crassly as a number. As it is right now, I'll be damned if any future kids I have want to serve. For what? A bunch of fatcats who could care less about their service, except for the supposed "patriotism" they get by swearing their support for troops? I say good riddance.

114. Not to spoil the mood, but he's right.
I see little wrong with the quote as it stands. It could have been phrased better perhaps, but this was actually an appropriate response. 2500 is a number. A horrible and terrible number, but still just a number. 2501 will be worse, and 2499 wasn't quite as bad. Just like 2502 will be worse than 2501. If we only had eight fingers people would get worked up over increments of 64, 512, 1024, and 1280 (in base eight that works out to 100, 1000, 2000, and 2500).

Whether or not the president is actually sincere in his regret is a different issue, but we can't really be expecting the press secretary to say otherwise, now can we?

Mind you, we use base ten, and 2500 is quite the milestone in the court of public opinion. We should really concentrate on that, and not this perceived gaffe. Place yourself in Snow's shoes and ask yourself how best to respond. Getting worked up over this phrasing is letting your desire to see these people in the worst possible light get the better of you. His comments weren't out of line, it's the war itself that is out of line.

117. i sort of agree
However, when you consider the individuals rather than the toal, number 2499 was equally sad as 2500 and 2500 is equally sad as 2501. To a certain degree I think its wrong to act like the death of the 2500th American in Iraq is any worse or more notable than the first death. They all are unnecessary and the product of decisions based on lies.
