i was at a stop light and a man behind me jumped out of his car
Edited on Thu Jun-15-06 05:06 PM by seabeyond

and came running to my window. he was driving a new beamer. a little older than i am, upper fourties. he was wearing a suit, a distinguished man. he puts his hand on my arm that is on the window and i look into his excited and happy face. he says to me " i love ALL of your bumperstickers" and gives me a thumbs up, with the hugest of smiles. my face, too, goes into a huge smile and as he runs back to his car stopped at a stop light... i yell "that is soooo sweeeet, thank you. and have a terrific day". my two kids, my niece and i drove off feeling awfully good as he followed and we pulled into the library..... to pick up books, we wave goodbye to each other.

this is the oh so red, very very red panhandle of texas. we were in the medical complex area. probably a doctor. not bad, to put forth the effort, running out of his car in the middle of a street to let me know he liked ALL my stickers.

11. that must have been such a relief!
I'll bet you've had to deal with hecklers and rude gestures, responding to your car.

But it certainly does send a signal to the reasonable people, too. I wave and smile at US vehicles (coming into my Canadian city) which have progressive markings, e.g. the Prius with the Texas plates (and "Sierra Club" and rainbow stickers). A friend of mine in Alabama makes a point of telling me, whenever she sees a Democratic sticker in her very pro-Bush town -- she says it makes her feel so less isolated.

i have had a handful compliment the stickers and it is always 40-50 yr old educated type (because of dress and manner) males. you know, the girlie man type.... lol lol lol.suit and ties, or khaki's

17. You might not want to drive around with a popcorn bag covering your plate.
;)

Seriously, good thinking (covering the plate for the pic). There are some nuts who troll these boards.

I had a similar experience last summer. I have a "No W" (the "W" in the circle with a line through it) on the bumper of my Porsche. After shopping at a local store, I was walking back to my car and saw a kid, about 14 or so, with his mother looking at my car. As I opened the car door, the kid said "Cool car". I said "Thanks". He looked back at me and said "Cool bumper sticker"...

...kinda reaffirmed my hope for the future...

Up here in Seattle we have quite a few vehicles with awesome sticker sentiment like that, so it doesn't take the same courage as having them in a red area-- Expecially as red as I understand Texas can be. (Not that Washington State isn't really as least half red especially Eastern Washington)

I am so fussy, I wouldn't even put a triple AAA sticker on my car, but it's time!

The RW's show their blind devotion, I guess it's time for me to show my eyes wide open devotion.

I will start a thread soon, with help me sticker my car.

Oh, by the way, last week, I was walking home from the grocery store and saw 2 stickers that put a smile on my face. They were (paraphrasing) "Pro America, Anti Bush" and "Pull Bushes Life Support".

Sorry to hijack your thread with that, but when I first saw the subject line, it made me think of the law that I just read about in the newspaper today.

Now, back to the subject. I love when I see someone with great Liberal stickers especially in my very conservative state!

a big white sheet with the words "Real Leaders Promote Peace" on it in black paint hanging between two big pine trees. I got so excited the first time I saw it that I turned around and pulled into their driveway. Nobody was there and I haven't seen anybody outside since then. I'm just a little too shy to go knock on the door. This is a very small town and very conservative. In a Connecticut way.

Someone just recently ripped off the ribbon. I can't seem to keep those on my car.

But it's funny how you can have such warm feelings for a stranger just because he/she has even a simple Kerry/Edwards bumpersticker from the last election. Or cold ones for every Bush sticker.

44. I have a question for you
I live in near you. I was wondering if you knew the last time Dubya visited our little area of Texas. I want to say the man hasn't showed his face around here since he was running in 2000. As far as I have researched, there's no mention in the Globe (local rag) of recent visits to the Panhandle.

It's a little strange that he doesn't say hi to us more often. After all, I believe one of our voting districts contained more Dubya voters per-capita than any other in the nation.

I have been crafting an LTE to ask that very question. The party in charge tends to take our area for granted and I think that's a mistake.

Well, not technically. I just left the vote for his Dem candidate unchecked. Smithee is a pub but he is a good man.

I really don't know much about Seliger's politics. He used to be a local television anchor as are so many of politicians in our area. Is he fighting T. Boone and is he supportive of the area teachers who are suing the state?

DETAIL: I haven't watched local news for at least three years. Satellite, natch. I don't read the Globe that often. Have your read that new, free city paper? The Independant, I believe. You can get it @ Hastings.

50. "When the power of love overcomes the love of power
the world will know peace. I couldn't read who said that but what a great sentiment. I was thinking the Dali Lama or Ghandi. Imagine my surprise to find out it was Jimi Hendrix who said it.

Great story and thanks for sharing. Love yr stickers too.

53. Cool beans!
Amarillo, too! In, 1978 (or so) I interviewed for a job in Armadillo (as I call it) with a fellow named T. Boone Pickens. He had a tri-motor Falcon-jet 50 and a few other planes. The big problem for me was the area across the road from the Amarillo airport .. PANTEX. Nuclear weapon assembly and storage. Nope, not for me.

in '57 (at age 8) I called it "armadillo" too. Moved away for most parts in '66 (college) then to FL. Missed the Pickens era. Back in '04...

76. Some things never change
Grew up in the Panhandle, left for college in 1953, went back every year or so to visit parents, back in 2003 for 50th class reunion, wasn't surprised that the invocation before dinner gave thanks for our wondrous leader, think the Plains are far more conservative than the South (and I lived in the Deep South from 1959 until we retired four years ago). I've never understood the source of the Plains conservatism - I listen to Woody Guthrie's Dust Bowl Blues, hear the anguish the people went through then and wonder how the memories of those hard times got lost. Maybe they think they survived on their own, but they didn't. At an impromtu class reunion in 1968 I ended up arguing with my entire class, will never forget the very rich woman who was on goverment welfare herself (oil depletion allowance, etc.) who said she'd let a three-year-old starve to death before she'd give the parents welfare. So much racial discrimination there, when the nearest black must have been at least 48 miles away in Liberal KS.

Anyway, so glad to hear that there are one or two liberals in this reddest of all red parts of the country.

57. You have such wonderful messages.
Glad he appreciated what you believe. My daughter and I saw a bumper sticker a few weeks ago about impeaching Bush. She gave this old man a thumbs up when we came to a red light and were next to them. He gave her a big smile. Probably because it reassured him that the next generation is awake.

Edited on Fri Jun-16-06 12:18 AM by AuntiBush
... I've been doing this when passing other's with these types of bumper-stickers, and passing protesters - folks I'm seeing more and more in small towns on my Saturday day-trips. It gives one a powerful, not-a-lone feeling, trust me. I beep, wave, give the peace sign, you name it. Gives one hope.

Luv the stickers!

83. two people I've talked to in person
said they don't want to appear being democrat or republican when they're trying to get a certain message out with their bumper stickers. apparently thinking that if someone sees that VERY eye catching DU sticker first, they'll ignore the rest of their messages... there's some serious bomb throwers on this site, so fairly or not, this is known as a very liberal website, but I'm thankful that everyone can be heard, and I understand their concern... it's all about what you're trying to do. the OP has a lot of messages on her car that don't necessarily say she's independent, dem, green, or rep...

84. true true
I do agree with you. I've found that there are many different approaches to the matter, and it all depends on how you, the aggitator, present yourself. I, for one, tend to be a very "in-your-face" type of person, but partially non-confrontational, and people can't help but respond to me. I personally have found that people with opposing viewpoints tend to get confrontational with me, ie- they ask me those very glib questions that people are prone to ask, like "where's your proof?" and "what are the dems gonna do about it?" (one note- people don't hesitate to harass a 'young little punk kid with tattoos' despite the fact that I'm 23, have a bachelor's degree in psychology, am going for another, and have been teaching for a while now). I use my ability to catch people off guard with a plethora of knowledge and information to quickly overcome opposition.

I'll have to post a picture of the back of my car someday. :)

71. a lot of doctors are coming around
I talk to them every day (will be talking to one in 2 minutes) and they're seeing that the health care system is broken, and they're seeing the results of having so many people uninsured ("..about 10% of my practice, and more and more every day" -- some I interviewed yesterday)

because they are not hateful or condescending in any way - so get the message across incredibly loud and clear.

77. I had a similar experience
when I lived in Nebraska. Back in 2001, I still Hillary and Gore stickers on my car. I was driving in downtown Lincoln, which is about as liberal as Nebraska gets, but it's still pretty red...particularly in 2001.

I stopped at a red light and a guy in the car next to me motioned for me to roll down my window. The guy was large, and I couldn't read whether he was pissed/happy/confused...but for some reason I rolled down the window anyway.

Him: Where'd you get that bumper sticker?!
Me: What??
Him: The Hillary bumper sticker, where'd you get that?
Me: The internet... (I still couldn't tell if he was pro or con, so I was thinking oh crap...the Hillary one, this should be interesting, since she doesn't really poll well with men in Nebraska)
Him: COOL!
Me: uh...what??

He proceeded to spend the rest of the red light, as well as the NEXT red light talking about how he loved Hillary, thought she was totally underrated, hated BushCo, etc.

I do, however, have more than a couple stories about times I got flipped off/screamed at/made fun of/called all sorts of nasty names for having the same group of stickers on my car.

82. KUDOS TO YOU! I have a story!
it's short - I pulled up to a light, and the lady in front of me had as many stickers as you and had the W with the slash through it (NO-W), and so I ran up to her and she was smiling as I ran up I could see she knew I was excited about her stickers, and I gave her one of the handful of No-W Buttons I had. She said, "aw, thank you!" and off we went! hehe...
