Westmoreland co-sponsors bill on the Ten Commandments and can't even name them

Colbert: What are the Ten Commandments?

Westmoreland: You mean all of them?--Um... Don't murder. Don't lie. Don't steal Um... I can't name them all. emailer Ruth asks: Does this guy deserve a $3,300 pay raise?

The guy co-sponsors a bill about the Ten Commandments and doesn't even know them. Priceless.

1. I liked Colbert's good-bye to him
It's normally some variation of, "Thanks for taking time away from (fill in blank) to speak with me." This time it was something like, "Thanks for taking time away from keeping the Sabbath Day holy to speak with me."

I don't think Westmoreland was amused.

2. Pathetic. I know more than three off the top of my head
Adultery, covet, murder, steal, lie, honor thy father and mother, keep the sabbath holy. The others escape me, but I could remember them if I thought hard enough.

3. Don't lie
I think the wording is bear false witness and that is not the same as not lieing. He could not even name three correctly.

5. Just posted this on another thread. AOL has it now and it's hysterical!
He's getting a raise?????
And so, another reason why congress deserves their self-awarded raise.
From Crooks and Liars:

He hasn't introduced a bill. He supports having the 10 Commandments on display in the House and Senate, and yet ... see if he can name them.

6. Now I understand why the Talibornagains
Want the Big Ten posted everywhere: they can't freaking REMEMBER them.

"Uh, let's see. Bear false witness or not bear false witness? I can never keep that straight!"

"What's this? Thou shalt NOT commit adultery? I am SOOOOOO screwed."

Maybe they should post copies of the Constitution everywhere. They might start remembering bits and pieces of it then.

7. Westmoreland will probably be surprised to find
that the 10 Commandments don't include "Thou shalt not be gay."

Gosh, wonder what he DOES think the 10 Commandments include since he doesn't really know.

16. When canvassing in favor of marriage equality...
and someone says they object to gay marriage on religious grounds, I like to sometimes quiz them on The Ten Commandments.

NOT ONE of those allegedly "religious" people could name all of them-- let alone in order.

By the way, don't try this on members of the clergy or on Chasidic Jews. They WILL know all of them-- in order.

Instead, try pointing out to them that the VERY FIRST Amendmednt to The Constitution nullifies the first four of the Ten Commandments.

I like to write The 10 Commandments on the inside front cover of my Pocket Guide to The Constitution:

I just wish it would carry over to the rest of his GOP colleague's and that the voting public would figure it out.

12. Michael Moore pulled the same stunt in 2000. You'd think they'd LEARN
Edited on Fri Jun-16-06 10:10 AM by IanDB1
You would THINK that after Michael Moore pulled this same stunt during an episode of The Awful Truth ( 7/26/2000 episode 210) , the Congresscritters sponsoring Ten Commandment bills would take the time to LEARN them.
http://www.tvmegasite.net/prime/shows/tvnation/episodeguide.shtml

(Can anyone find a transcript?)

That's even worse than the right-wing Republican from Free Republic, John Armor, who is running for Congress who doesn't even know The Eighth Amendment-- oh, and he's a CONSTITUTIONAL LAWYER:

See:

Interview with John Armor. Reds and blues sit down for a talk.
<snip>

What was particularly revealing about Armor's understanding of the constitution was when, toward the end of the meeting, I got to ask him a question I've wanted to ask every congressperson running for office since I understood the concept of free elections.

First I turned to Screwy Hoolie, who was sitting to my right, and asked him to pick a number between one and ten.

Screwy Hoolie looked a bit perplexed, but after a while he said: "Eight."

Then I turned to Mr. Armor and asked:

"Sir, could you please tell me what the eighth Amendment to the Constitution says?"

Mr. John "I'm-a-constitutional-lawyer" Armor did not remember!

For the record, the 8th Amendment reads: "Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted."
