Dixie Chicks in London
*** Shepherd's Bush Empire, London

Betty Clarke
Saturday June 17, 2006
The Guardian

"Just so you know, we're embarrassed that the president of the United States comes from Texas." When Natalie Maines, singer of Dixie Chicks uttered these words at the Shepherd's Bush Empire three years ago, she was passionate, decisive and greeted with cheers. When she repeats the remark tonight, she's smothered in roared approval before she can finish. But there is a sense of sadness behind the defiance.

3. Wow, what a fine piece of writing in the Guardian, and gorgeous
tribute to the dauntless Dixie Chicks! I am so pleased they are getting roars of approval in London. Darkness before dawn, you know. Real artists and real peace lovers are seldom appreciated in their own land, or by dirty old lying, warmongering establishments that have no idea how to create anything, and only know how to exploit and destroy. We think it's all new--because it's so shocking to us, suffering a fascist coup--but it's an age old tale. And artists, who are, by their nature, truthtellers--if they are real artists--often suffer the most venom from the worthless ghouls and vampires of the Establishment of the Rotten Few.

Like the Beatles, the Dixie Chicks are taking a marginal pop format--something once relegated to the back pages of the Entertainment section (like rock 'n' roll once was), and are transforming it into the brilliant center of cultural and political revolution. It's thrilling to see this happen. I hope the Dixie Chicks get the word on electronic voting, like the Beatles got the word on the Vietnam War, because it's Bushite-controlled electronic voting that has to be gotten rid of, before we can do anything about the Iraq War. The Bushites and their lapdog press don't care what we think BECAUSE they control the vote count now. We need to throw these election theft machines into 'Boston Harbor.' Then we'll see America again. No more sadness!

4. I hear that sense of sadness
everytime I listen to the album, which is daily now.

I don't get that the sadness is caused by sorrow over the actions they took but rather the actions directed at them. A sadness one feels after a deep betrayal. And they have been betrayed.

I also hear thankfulness for the support of loved ones that sttod by and held the world at bay.

I also hear defiance aimed not only at an industry that shunned and tried to ruin them but also at freaks that threatened their lives.

I also hear resolve to stand with principle and solidarity agianst the tide trying to wash them away.
