Why isn't Al Gore's movie on the greatest page?????
Edited on Sat Jun-17-06 10:19 AM by Harper_is_Bush
Are DU'ers going to see this movie?

I saw it the other night, and it was absolutely fantastic.

The science he presents is clear and established. The imagery is beautiful, and the points demonstrated by them is a call to action.

GO SEE THIS MOVIE IF YOU CARE ABOUT THIS WORLD!!!

Even if you know all about it and are a member of the choir, you will be supporting perhaps one of the most important events to come along in the Global Warming issue EVER.
Why? Because this might actually shake people out of their apathy.

Global Warming is an issue that even I have been apathetic about. I've accepted it was happening for a long time now and that we were causing it with greenhouse gases, but I've been apathetic about acting to curb it.

Al Gore has provided steps we can take, and I'm taking them. Already went out and picked up flouressent bulbs for the whole house. Next I'll be phoning my Hydro company to ask them if I can purchase green energy, and if not why not.
There's many more steps Gore gives us also. Go to the official movie website and you'll see a link to what you can do.

1. No corporate theatres in my area are showing it.
I'll have to wait for the DVD...

Why am I totally not suprised?

2. You should phone and DEMAND it be brought in.
I certainly would. Phone, and phone often.

Getting this movie out there is critical. It has the power to move people to action.

10. Regarding getting the movie out and seen....
Gore was interviewed by MoveOn about a week ago and he said that he is going to train 1000 teachers, civic leaders etc in Nashville and give them the movie and his speech to keep getting the word out.

5. It just opened here at an independent theater known for art films. I
wonder if there is an attempt to suppress it showing.

8. If there is an attempt to suppress it - it isn't working too well..
A movie like this -- documentary, about science, 'starring' a politician, about global warming -- just will not sound like a block buster to the vast majority of movie theater owners who've been rewarded again and again for never underestimating the type of pablum that Murkans will pay to see.

I believe it will continue to roll its way into theaters across the nation because it IS making big $$$$ at each theater that is playing it.

As of last weekend "Inconvenient Truth" was the 2nd highest PER THEATER grossing movie. It was #11 in terms of total box office last weekend, but #2 in terms of box office per theater: 122 theaters @ $12.3K per theater.

Rank - Title - Box Office Per Theater - Number of Theaters

1 - Cars - $15.1k - 3985
11 - Inconvenient Truth - $12.3k - 122

2 - The Break-Up - $6.6k - 3075
3 - X-Men - $4.4k - 3680
4 - The Omen - $5.9k - 2723
5 - Da Vinci Code - $3.1k - 3319
6 - Over the Hedge - $2.9k - 3527
7 - Prairie Home - $6.0k - 760
8 - Mission Impossible - $1.6k - 1908
9 - R.V. - $1.2k - 1622
10 - Poseidon - $1.1k - 1724

Rotten Tomatoes should have this weekend's gross up by Monday noon'ish...

9. I went with my 76 year old parents. The theater applauded at the end!
My parents (and gf) all thought it was excellent.

They were talking about getting a smart car and riding the bus and buying better light bulbs all the way home!!

Last time I remember applause at the end of a movie was Farenheit 9/11.

11. Big money Dems need to invest more in NEWS MEDIA NETWORKS so individual
issues can have the opportunity to get a fair hearing. Media seems more intent on disputing Gore and his persona than giving the issue of global warming a fair platform.

12. The indie theatre, in which we saw it, had it playing on 3 screens and
people lined up around the block.

Everyone that I've mentioned the movie to has expressed a desire to see it...repubs and dems alike.

It's not going away anytime soon. MKJ

17. I'm going to donate the book (and the DVD) to my public library
I know there are a lot of people in my town who can't afford to buy it (or take time off from family duties to go). So this is a way to ensure that more folks will be able to get the message.

You know it's good when there are climate change researchers in the audience going "oh, shit! I didn't know it was that bad" when they see the graphs. And the info is right up to this spring.

19. I just saw the movie this evening. The small group in Knoxville applauded.
I think at the end, while the credits were running the few people in the audience were simply...stunned. (Like me)
I could not get up and I scanned all the credits while listening to Melissa Etheridge's "I Need to Wake Up".

Riveting, urgent and all the topics which have been discussed over and over here on DU were splayed on a theater screen with the narration and clips by a very humane and sensitive "used to be next president of the U.S. ". Wrenching scenes of climate catastrophes...glaciers melting, trash gushing into the U.S. atmosphere by mega corporations, haunting Katrina images all an explanation of "era of consequences". Meanwhile a very demure and somewhat rounded Al Gore does his globe trotting, touting his rollerboard and embracing his 17 in. Mac to spread the message in the northern half of the globe. He even had to do the security check dance as a normal passenger.

Many scenes were tender, you could see the love of his country home in Carthage, Tn. The only scenes of suffering were the Katrina clips.

His graphs were explosive, and "in your face" shocking. No sugar coating there at all--only implications that we were living an era of deception and lies by the current admin, although those words are not verbalized, only circumstantially referred to.

I highly recommend this film. And encourage your co-workers and friends and family to do the same.

20. I saw it last night with my hubby and child.
It was deeply moving AND motivating. I had just ordered my Prius. We bought some more efficient lightbulbs also. My friends built a house that actually generates more than enough power for itself via solar and wind energy. Our pool has always been heated via solar power, but we are also planning an environmentally-friendly home. It feels great to be relatively independent of Greedy Big Oil and Friends, in addition to helping the environment!

22. Question: Re: Florescent Bulbs?
Hi. I have a question for you regarding the Florescent bulbs. Back in the early 90's I bought compact florescent bulbs to use in my parents house after an environmental studies class talked about them in college. While good in concept, they put out so little light they were barely useable (though they did last a long time.)

I wondered if they'd improved at all in recent years. I'd love to use them if you can actually see by them now. Can you?

Meg

23. I have 13 Watt Sylvania florescents that are just as bright as a 60 Watt
incandecent. (sp)

It's a whiter light, but it's absolutely bright enough.

24. I bought some today
Thanks for the reply. I decided to try getting some today and I would say they are a huge improvement over the old ones. They are much brighter than they used to be - the old ones couldn't be seen across the room though it was a good idea at the time to use them - if you can't see with them it made it not as appealing. I guess they figured that out and made alot of improvements.

The only thing I am dissapointed with was that I was hoping to replace some of my outdoor lights with them, but they say only for dry locations. I did buy some compact flourescent floodlights that were indoor/outdoor and am trying those. My only concern is they also say not to be used with a photocell, which all my outdoor lights are, so we'll see if they have any trouble. I may search and see if there are any indoor/outdoor smaller lamps that can be used in post lamps. Those are the ones that run the most at my house and are a pain to change cause they are constantly burning out. I'd love to replace those - but then again they'd have to be small enough to fit in the fixture.

Meg
