7 explosions hit Baghdad within 5 hours, many dead - we're winning!
'They are in their last throes and we are turning the corner and I got my photo-op and my mojo back so all is well.'

=====

BAGHDAD, Iraq - A series of explosions struck commercial areas in Baghdad within hours Saturday, killing at least 17 people and dealing a blow to a huge government operation to secure the capital.

The blasts — seven within five hours — brought the death toll around Iraq to at least 23 people. The bombings also wounded at least 72. A day earlier, a suspected shoe bomber blew himself up inside one of Baghdad's most prominent Shiite mosques, killing 13 people.

The U.S. military said a soldier was killed Friday and two others were missing after an attack on a checkpoint near Youssifiyah, 12 miles south of Baghdad. The area is known as the "Triangle of Death" because of frequent ambushes and attacks against U.S. soldiers and Iraqi troops.

"We are currently using every means at our disposal — on the ground, in the air and in the water — to find them," military spokesman Maj. Gen. William Caldwell said.

11. So how does this work for the Bushistas?
They've had Yet Another Victory In Iraq Announcement, and in a totally predictible fashion the insurgency in Iraq has made it clear that there is no victory, that the occupation will continue to be bloody and awful until we get weary enough to pack up and leave. It is only June. November is far away. This big week of reframing is collapsing already. What's next?

22. how does this work for the Bushistas? - defense spending increase and
the product, the Iraq war continues until, as Bush put it, The future presidents will decide the outcome of the Iraq war, as long as it's making money? it'll continue -- like having a valuable business location!!

23. Oh sure I understand the kleptocracy angle
What I don't get is how they think that another Mission Not Accomplished moment - so far in advance of the november elections - is going to do anything other than drive the popular distrust of and dismay with the republican party. They are either arrogantly stupid and think that they can just rerun the same sorry plays and have it work for the third time, or they have something else entirely in mind.

Maybe I just don't get it, perhaps at this point the gerrymandering and fraud has made the midterm election practically irrelevent and the 'campaign' is mainly to provide a media narrative to explain an improbable victory in november. In other words this is all for our benefit, so that enough of the opposition is confused into believing that people really did vote for more of the same that open civil disobedience is unlikely.

2. Surely we can find some good news here to satisfy the flag wavers
- It could have been 27 killed instead of 17
- Only two Americans are missing (insert talking point - more die in car wrecks every hour)
- Triangles of death are smaller than rectangles of death
- That Caldwell guy is a MAJOR General

Yes "conservatives" we have to find humor in your pathetic excuses to justify this pile of garbage which is on your shoulders. You wanna wave a flag? Do it in Baghdad.

10. Stay the course
Just stay the course.

My friend's cousin was killed in Iraq a week or so ago. He was a Marine and re-enlisted for a second tour recently. Before he was killed, my buddy told me he was writing his mother and saying something was not feeling right this time. I got the impression that he was meaning that it is more of a mess than it was before.

His funeral was yesterday.

I'm so damn tired of hearing that if you're against the war, you don't support the troops. You want to support the troops..............then BRING THEM HOME!
