Too strange. Former Bush admin.official related to Mary Kay Letourneau.

Last night I'm watching CNN. There are two different hour long programs, one about Mary Kay Letourneau and another about private military contractors. During the story about child rapist Mary Kay Letourneau, I wasn't really paying attention. Going on about having their children, spending seven years in jail, etc.

Then I'm watching another story about private military contractors in Iraq. They travel to Blackwater's headquarters in North Carolina and mention a Blackwater executive, the former Director of the CIA Counterterrorist Center, Cofer Black. Doing a little research I found that former Defense Department Inspector General Joseph E. Schmitz, a Bush administration appointee also worked for Blackwater.

So What links these two seemingly unrelated stories? What's the connection? Joseph E. Schmitz is Mary Kay Letourneau's brother. CNN failed to mention the Blackwater/Letoureau connection.

A former conservative congresscritter from the 70's and 80's. He did something bad, can't remember what but had to resign in shame. I presume the Schmitz in the program is brother or cousin???

That is one of the mysteries of Mary Kay's life - she was devastated upon learning that about her father. Sorry I don't have a link but have seen so many shows about her and it is something that is mentioned.

Early in 1982, John George Stuckle, an infant born on June 10, 1981, was treated at an Orange County hospital for an injured penis. A piece of hair was wrapped so tightly around the organ "in a square knot," according to one doctor--that it was almost severed. The surgery went well, and the baby suffered no permanent injury. However, the baby's mother, Carla, a 43-year-old Swedish-born immigrant and longtime Republican volunteer, wasn't allowed to take John George home, since some of the attending doctors were convinced the hair had been deliberately tied around his penis.

During a custody hearing, Schmitz acknowledged fathering John George and another child out of wedlock. The admission effectively ended his political career (though he made a quixotic run for the Congressional seat of Bob Dornan in 1984). Schmitz and his wife, Mary, a right-wing political commentator, briefly separated over the incident.

A few years ago, no one had ever heard of it. The company was founded by a very right-wing fundamentalist Christian and former Navy SEAL by the name of Erik Prince. Prince comes from a family that was a major bankroller of far-right-wing causes. His father was a close friend of Gary Bauer and helped him to found the Family Research Council.

I always felt some empathy for Mary Kay Latourneau, her involvement with a 13-year old was indeed criminal, but I just think the household she grew up in made her mentally ill.

"This woman is sick." Wasn't her victim a kid of 12 when she started in with him? She was in her late 20s or so when she started with him?

Children of 12 or 13 should not be having sex with adults, nor should they be having sex with each other. I am no prude, please. I worked for Planned Parenthood of CT and am a parent and grandparent of 4. This is not to say that 12 and 13 year olds should not have a healthy idea of sexuality. That can and should be accomplished by askable and accessible parents who can answer kids questions and reassure them that they are not weird or strange for having the feelings they have normally.

Thanks to this thread, I now understand this LeTourneau situation better. My God, look at what repression and ignorance hath wrought!! I am SERIOUSLY worried about her kids!!

one of Mary Kay's brothers is married to Columba Bush's sister (i.e. he's Noelle's uncle).

between Colomba(sp) Bush and the Schmitz family, I believe her brother married the brother of Mary Kay.
