Just got back from 9 days there - part business/part touring. People were warm and friendly to me as an individual American, but kept asking me how could Bush possibly have been elected a second time - didn't the American people understand what a disaster his policies were and how he had destroyed the good opinion of the U.S. previously held by the rest of the world?
And by the way, Ireland's economy is still booming (the Celtic Tiger) & the people are very upbeat, happy, & bustling -in stark contrast to the stressed and worried atmosphere here in the US. And while I was there, an issue arose concerning a gap in the law which allowed a rapist/pedophile to be released, and the Irish papers & public were politically savy enough to realize that the legislature/PM could have and should have strengthened this law decades ago - so the papers tore in to all the politicians, and had a front page picture of the head of the PM on a serving platter! The legislature was called back for an emergency session (I got to attend the one in their Senate); the Minister of Justice (analagous to Gonzalez) was called on the carpet and subjected to hostile and rigorous questioning and challenges ("You are a LIAR!" shouted at him) by the Senators, and a law was drafted and passed by both Chambers in one day. God, it was glorious! And the papers went after all of them! So be aware that there still is a free press in the world - just not here.
