Connie Chung bids bizarre adieu, from atop grand piano, to MSNBC
NY Post: CONNIE CROAKS ADIEU
By MICHAEL SHAIN

June 19, 2006 -- THE ratings-starved Maury Povich and Connie Chung weekend show on MSNBC ended its short, six-month run with a bizarre send-off - sure to live on as a tone-deaf stunt Chung will not soon be allowed to forget.
Perched on the edge of a white grand piano and decked out in a full-length evening gown, the former CBS and CNN anchorwoman warbled a farewell song that put down Dan Rather (with whom she co-anchored the CBS news in the early 1990s), her husband and cable TV - all at the same time.

"Thanks for the memories," she sang to the tune of the old standard....

15. No, no, you have to see the part
where she rolls slowly off the piano, grunting, and then holds out a long note that is so flat I thought the piano player was going to pass out!

Chung just knocked Paula Abdul off the "drunk on tv" throne!

:wow:

13. Yes, but then I managed to watch Titanic through to the end.
Her grunting as she pulled herself down and off the piano did add a certain touch of burlesque humor.

She acts and sounds drunk out of her mind. Pathetic.

Oh well, it's a fitting exit for the former co-anchor of the CBS Evening News.

I'm looking forward to Couric's final bow in the near future.

7. How did that show make it 6 months?
Edited on Mon Jun-19-06 09:53 AM by tridim
I never saw it and I still know it sucked.

The best part is some pissed off sound guy at MSNBC cut out the piano accompaniment and released just the feed of her voice. Good work pal, and thanks for boosting the audio when she grunts. :)

9. I saw part of this yesterday and it was both bizarre and ghastly! I
didn't know that they were quitting the show, but IMO it might have been sooner if she had performed like this earlier!

11. I'd say she was drunk, but she wouldn't have been able to read the words
off the teleprompter. It was like a bad SNL skit. Wow.

I think she was fully aware of what she was doing which is very strange.

18. MSNBC set this up to fail before the ink was dry on the contracts
They picked a bizarre time of Saturdays and gave them 30 minutes. Contrast that to oh, say, Hardball, Scarborough, Abrams Report, Tucker Carlson, Rita Cosby, and even Countdown (starting at 3pm through to 10pm, 60 minutes, many airing twice in the day, single host) to the obscure "team" of Chung/Povich at the bizarre time of Saturdays for 30 minutes.

I guess now they can say, "Well, we tried !" :eyes:

Doomed from the start.

22. You know, it might have been tacky but it was honest.
Wish more of the clowns they have pasted on our screens and are trying to pass off as journalists of substance would just have an honest moment or two like that.

23. I think she thought it would be so bad it would be "campy" - that's why
there was no accompaniment, even though there was a pianist sitting there. I think she wanted it to be excruciatingly awful - maybe to get her name back in the headlines and it worked. SHe may become a "hot" guest for the talk shows now.

30. There was cranberry juice all over my white bedspread
in the wee hours of Saturday morning when i woke up. It was the first thing I saw when turned on the TV while drinking my juice. Connie owes me a new bedspread. But that had me laughing very hard with a mouthful of juice. I thought I would never catch my breath. But hey what a way to end a journalism career as a trampy media coquette - Go Connie!
