Sentencing for Lay, Skilling in Enron fraud trial delayed
Jaime Jansen at 8:31 AM ET

US District Judge Sim Lake has delayed the sentencing of former Enron executives Kenneth Lay and Jeffrey Skilling until October 23. Lake agreed on Friday to a motion filed by the defense team to delay the sentencing, which was originally scheduled for September 11. Lake is still considering a motion made by Skilling's lawyers to give Skilling access to $60 million in frozen assets.

(snip)

The jury convicted Lay on all six fraud and conspiracy counts , and convicted Skilling of 19 out of 28 securities and wire fraud and insider trading counts . He was found not guilty of nine counts of insider trading. Lay faces a maximum of 45 years in prison for conspiracy and fraud, while Skilling faces a maximum sentence of 185 years for his conviction.

2. Maybe it will be in the news cycle just in time to remind everyone
of their connections to republicans prior to voting.

7. GOP doesn't want any pardons before mid-November
So they don't want the mega-crooks sentenced too early.

4. Why would he grant this delay? The article doesn't say.
I can understand Lay and Skilling wanting to postpone the jail time as long as possible, but I thought his atty's would have to have a real reason in order to have their request granted.

10. This is pretty standard in federal cases
Particularly one as complex as this one in terms of calculating the sentencing guidelines. I wouldn't be at all surprised if it is further delayed.
