ESPN/ABC WC Announcers Need To Get Off The Team USA 24/7 Schtick
Edited on Mon Jun-19-06 04:44 PM by stopbush
Look, I'm glad that the USA made it to the WC, but enough, already! They've got a snowball's chance in
hell of advancing in this thing. The talent pool is just overwhelmingly against them. On top of that, they've
looked like shit. A 3-zip drubbing by Czech Republic in the first game and a tie in the second game that was only a tie
because the Italy scored an errant goal for the USA by accident.

I realize that ABC is probably trembling in their boots that the USA will be knocked out on Thursday. Do they really
think that American fans watching the WC are strictly American-only fans? Come on! Is anybody watching the WC
because the USA is in it? I doubt it.

There are so many other interesting stories and players they could be covering. This isn't the Olympics. It's WC. It's
the football that the majors never cover in the first place. The announcers spent most of the USA/Italia game bashing the refs -
who are bad, but they're equal opportunity abusers, after all! And every pregame show is at least 15 minutes of Team USA
stories. What's there to say? They're outclassed on too many levels. It's really getting boring! Let's move on, already.

I'd like to see Team USA advance, but if they lose I'd like to see them exit with dignity, not as part of the "the refs were crummy...
the world hates us...this isn't even real football" whine being advanced by ABC.

1. Tie was Italy Loss was Czech Republic
I think ABC/ESPN have done a great job. "The refs are crummy" idea wasn't started by ABC but by Franz Beckenbauer.

2. The Chechs beat the US
and we tied Italy. And, yes, the refs were terrible. The US team outplayed the Italians.

7. By and large
Americans don't care about Soccer, never have and never will. But if Team USA were to advance, it would probably the popularity of the sport, at least in the short term. But, remember when the women, led by Mia Hamm and the rest won the womens World Cup? Pundits were stating that thias would help soccer. So far, it hasn't helped much. This country just is not a soccer loving country.

8. I think Americans love soccer on the middle-school level,
but not the professional level. Funny as it's generally safer than American football and more entertaining and fast paced.
