What is the scoop on * making Hawaiian ocean preserve?
WASHINGTON - President Bush on Thursday created the world's largest marine protected area — a group of remote Hawaiian islands that cover 84 million acres and are home to 7,000 species of birds, fish and marine mammals, at least a quarter of which are unique to Hawaii.

I can't find any news releases from the major US environmental groups. I am guessing it will be underfunded, un-protected, etc and is out of political motivation but what is the scoop?

1. a sub base perhaps? a secret test site of some sort? or just the fact
that there isn't any oil there? after all, this has been six years in the making.

2. Any reporting of facts in this matter seems curiously absent, for sure
Politically, they can say they did something to protect the environment when the Republican presidential candidate of 2008 is forced to defend her/his record since they will have started in on drilling in ANWR.

Hey, just a stab.

5. Someplace to for our corporate masters to hide when they've
thoroughly fucked our environment. By then, our bankrupt country will just sell this ocean preserve to them.

6. Nothing but hot lava underground
no oil, so no good for drilling. Basically throwing the country a bone. However I don't doubt that there's some nefarious ulterior motive at play here.
