Santorum: "No amnistía!"..Asshole's webpage now in SPANISH too!
Edited on Mon Jun-19-06 10:37 PM by Bluebear

"No amnistía."

So begins a new Spanish-language passage on Rick Santorum's campaign Web site explaining his opposition to a Senate immigration bill that some Republicans claim includes granting amnesty to those in this country illegally.

"Dando la amnistía ... ridiculiza y degrada los sacrificios de inmigrantes legales."

("Giving amnesty ... mocks and demeans the sacrifices of legal immigrants.")

Until recently, English-language visitors to the Santorum site could read a tough summary of the Republican senator's position on a measure he complained would make it possible for two-thirds of illegal immigrants to gain legal status - some by going home to get a valid work visa, some by paying a fine and partial back taxes. But Spanish readers initially found no such language - no mention of amnesty, no mention of "felons" and "serial lawbreakers," as in the English discourse.

The Santorum camp said that was only because the Spanish version had not been updated, and that a word-for-word translation was soon coming. Now that's happened.

1. You might enjoy this, too. But it is in English.
The Zogby poll that shows most Americans, including Democrats, prefer the House solution, which does not include amnesty.

2. I'm torn...
right now many of these people are doing jobs that need to be filled..but I don't think they should get anything but guest passes. Let their own country work on it's problems. They can take their American money back to Mexico and still live well. I see the problems Europe has now that globalization has shipped the jobs out that arab immigrants once performed and I don't want that happening here. Once these jobs eventually disapear...and they will...we will have millions of unskilled workers in the US with nothing to do.

3. I think "Dando la amnistia" to be a very bad Spanish construction.
It is like a dictionary translation. There is actually a word "amnistiar" that makes the use of "dar" useless. Amnistiar means "to give amnesty".... the present participle is not as widely used in Spaish as in English, and the gerund form en español is the infinitive...
For example, "Cleansing santorum is difficult." Would be "Es dificil el limpiar de santorum."

I would translate it as: "Amnistiar ...migrantes legales."

It sounds like someone took 4 hours of Spanish (too busy in Economics or prelaw to get a BA) and grabbed a dictionary...

I have never seen a Spanish sentence introduced by the present participle.
