PBS's "The Dark Side" - "If you watch only one documentary this decade"
Edited on Tue Jun-20-06 10:11 AM by swag
Frontline's The Dark Side airs tonight in many areas.

The Oregonian's TV critic Ted Mahar (sorry, no link to review yet) had this to say:

If you watch only one documentary this decade, make it "The Dark Side." Also, record it. ...

You will want to rewind from time to time to be sure that you really heard what you heard. ...

Tenet, a holdover from the Clinton regime, quickly reported that the World Trace Center and Pentagon attacks were the work of Osama bin Laden and Al-Qaida operating out of Afghanistan.

But Cheney needed to sell the attack as somehow effected by Saddam Hussein.

"Dark Side" details how the weapons of mass destruction fiction was concocted and sold. Some commentators have accused Cheney, Rumsfeld and Bush of cherry-picking bits of intelligence while ignoring other bits that did not fit the scenario. Those who tell the tale here indicate that no cherry-picking was involved. The details were all invented.

When Mahar's full review is posted, it will be at http://www.oregonlive.com .

A shame that they will be mainly preaching to the choir, for the most part. Most of the viewers on PBS are liberal-minded and have known of Cheney's "Dark Side" for quite a while.

K&R!

showing that if CIA agents didn't provide Bush with the "information he wanted", they had to be prepared to resign.

I look forward to seeing the Dark Side too.

26. Cokie "leftwing firebrand" ?
Cokie Hokum
http://mediamatters.org/items/200410120010

and this:

"...should we pretend Cokie Roberts is a firebrand of the left? In the real world, she might sue for slander if you called her "left-wing." The main "cause" she champions in Washington is the right of pundits to rake in big lecture fees from corporate interests.
But in the make-believe world of TV, Roberts is the kind of pro-corporate centrist who passes as a liberal, the only alternative offered to the fire-breathers of the right.
Network news executives and corporate sponsors seem to prefer TV debates that exclude half the political spectrum -- the half led by advocates for middle-class consumers, labor, the environment, minorities and others critical of the status quo."

15. It amazes me too. All I can figure is that they have not spent much
time watching PBS. I have always considered Frontline, especially, to be the most factual series of documentaries on TV. They are well researched and don't play on sensationalism to try to sway their audience to one point of view or another, IMO.

70. a "christian related show": hmmm, does that automatically mean
its a show that slants to the right??

Their christian related shows are not of the fundie variety; a lot of moderate or liberal christians (like myself) find them these programs excellent.

Its not like Jerry Falwell and James Dobson are ever on PBS.

hindu, buddhism, and hare krishna enough for ya, but consider american demographics for a bit.... they do have to get viewers.

And before anyone rips the good ol' USA PBS, don't ya think that religious coverage for TV in India probably is 99% hindu, in Pakistan its 99% islam, in China its....well they probably don't allow any religious TV, even buddhism....

100. Daddy Bush was convincing his longtime friend Adm. Brent Scowcroft
Edited on Tue Jun-20-06 11:30 PM by amandabeech
to write an editorial in the New York Times pointing out why going into Iraq and taking out Hussein would be a very bad idea. Scowcroft hit all the main points. S

Bush Jr. gave an interview in which he was asked if he consulted his father before he went into Iraq. Jr. said that he consulted another father who was better equipped to offer advice and support; i.e., God.

This is a reminder. Despite the elder Bush's reputation as a complete slime, he listened to those who told him to chase the Iraqis out of Kuwait but not to topple Hussein back in the first Gulf War. Those advocating caution were Powell, Scowcroft and most other Middle East heads of state, including King Hussein of Jordan and whoever was running Saudi Arabia at that time. All agreed that toppling Hussein would unleash severe sectarian and ethnic violence which could spread beyond Iraq's borders. Sounds familiar, huh?

I think that one thing Cheney & Rummy used to get Junior hopped up to go into Iraq was to remind him of how his father chickened out and didn't get the job done, then tell him that he could outdo his father by toppling Saddam. Oedipus where art thou?

This has shown that Tenet should have cut bait in Dec. 2001 after having routed the Taliban from power. Tenet then fell victim to his close relationship to the president and fell under the PNAC spell and sold the NIE as a "slam dunk".

This has shown from the CIA perspective how Cheney pressured the "right" intelligence to come out.

It has shown Cheney in one of his direct lies ("there is no doubt" Saddam has amassed weapons of mass destruction).

It has shown the aluminum story for what it was, a complete exaggeration.

It has shown the Niger/Yellowcake story for what it was, a complete fabrication.

It has revealed that Powell was kept from knowing that "Curveball" was the single source and that "Scooter" Libby directed Powell what to say in his speech to the UN.

This should be required viewing in every school and every office in every state of the union!

This *should* be what the Senate is providing to us in the form of Phase II of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence report of the run-up to the Iraq war but that the traitor Sen. Roberts keeps scuttling.

This administration MUST stand before the Hague for its crimes against humanity.

And a pretty good indicator that Cheney never intended to find any candidate other than himself for VP in 2000.

Boy do I wish Tenet would have a moment of clarity and decide to spill his guts. Powell too. Those two guys, if they'd had the fortitude, might have been able to stop the whole thing. Instead, they gave in knowing full well what was happening.

Cheney and Rummie are evil bastards.

Edited on Wed Jun-21-06 12:12 AM by higher class
in Afghanistan and oil in Iraq and nuclear equipment and technology plus weapons everywhere there is money and a method for laundering it.

Drugs. Earth resources. Weapons. Contracts. Raw war materials, supplies, and services. Combined with oil barons breathing down necks to control the people, limit the wealth and population. and demanding that the Constitutions be revised.

This is what it's all about and we're here reeling from several new truths about all kinds of losses - each day - all the while fighing each other increases.

What it should be about is peace, treating the planet in the way it deserves, allowing people to rise to their highest creative and devotional ability and to surpass the bare basics of survival. The opposite of criminality.

Called my dad on the other side of the country and told him to watch it. He was quite the supporter in 2003 before the war started and when I was marching in Washington.

I am so glad I marched in Washington along with over 500,000 people before the war started. It may not have accomplished it's goal in stopping the march to war but it will help me explain my role in the war when my son asks me what happened and why was America so stupid.

He claimed there was a massive Nuclear Program in Iraq during the timeframe of

Israel had pretty much put an end to that program with a raid in 1981.

See here...

God Damn Cheney and Rummy are evil. Soooooooooooo evil. These two mass-murdering bloodsuckers have been a symbiotic tumor in this country's brain for over three decades now. How they have co-opted the nation's "intelligence" into the Pentagon is just about the most horrible thing I've ever seen or heard of. The results of this indescribable evil have been 2,500 dead American soldiers, 20,000 more wounded, and of those almost 9,000 too wounded to return to service (which means they've probably lost limbs or had their faces burned off), 300 billion dollars of treasure and quickly counting and between 100,000 and 200,000 innocent Iraqis. Oh, and let's not forget about the two unidentifiable (headless?) corpses on their way back to Delaware. Jesus Christ.

I wouldn't have known about it without DU.

I watched and it was amazing. There was enough evidence in this documentary to convict the whole lot of them and send them to prison for eternity -- now we just need to get someone with the authority to do it. Show this to a grand jury!

The people they interviewed were all marvelous -- so many CIA people who left within the last couple of years.
