Why does the Truthout story continue to get a forum here?
Edited on Tue Jun-20-06 12:09 PM by ShaneGR
By forum I mean weekly 500+ reply threads that serve to do nothing but continue the argument between the tin foil hatters and the reality crews. I'm kind of missing the days when this site was more about fact checking and opinion pieces. I guess maybe that's what this still is but I'm just tired of hearing them defend an obviously false story.

2. I fully trust and support Truthout.org. I have no reason not to. I trust
that those good people will one day be able to tell us what happened.

I trust in the corruption of the bush regime in working behind the scenes to involve those good people in something to besmirch their characters.

I'm on the side of the good guys and until they do something dastardly, I'll continue to trust them.

You can choose not to, but I gotta tell ya, there's not many left to pin your trust on, is there?

4. Well said.
If the story had been written by any mainstream media member, DU would be in all-out attack mode.

But for some unexplainable reason, this absurd story still has legs here.

I've been waiting for some explanation from Leopold, Ash, and Pitt, but none's coming folks. At least not one that has more truth in it than CYA-ing.

6. Keep waiting
we've seen these kinds of divisive tactics before and not many folks are ready to buy into it. You may want to rethink your position or give up on the campaign to discredit Truthout.

22. I think your tinfoil hat is on too tightly...
It appears to be cutting off circulation to your brain.

The story was/is/will always be false and there is no reason for him/her to apologize. If a news source posts blatantly untrue stories, they discredit themselves. Truthout should shut down.

5. Because some are reluctant to jump on the bandwagon
that's trying to give Truthout the "Rather" treatment.

Some of us prefer to be loyal to a reliable progressive news source and wait until all the facts are available.

12. Interesting the word "crew" was used...
crew- A predefined labor group that works as a whole at a given operation or on a specific job. Used instead of reporting the individual personnel who did the work.

You can always hide them. You can also alert the moderators of any threads you think are inappropriate.

In the meantime, I'm hiding this thread. I'm tired of posts like yours. "Why do people continue to talk about that THING that I'm talking about right now?"

16. Because a notable personality from TruthOut came here and...
...made a big splash in their post, indicating that this was the Big One. They further indicated that this was the Real Thing, The Big One. Many people, including myself, were persuaded into investing a good deal of emotion in the issue after being burned a number of times by other stories ("Rathergate", for instance). That was, I believe, a Friday. An appreciable number of people still had reservations about such a scoop and began asking questions. Some of those who believed the story unquestioningly took offense that anyone would question information so thoroughly-endorsed by this notable personality and began criticizing those with questions, sometimes to the point of questioning their commitment to the Democratic Party or, worse, accusing them both slyly and openly of being Conservative Trolls.

By Sunday, after two full days of the worst infighting I have witnessed on DU after 4-5 years of being here, things came to an unexpected and bizarre head: The notable personality posted a series of drunken messages bolstering the accusations that those with questions were likely conservative trolls and indicating that DU should be thankful for the "service" he and his unquestioning supporters rendered, going so far as to sarcastically state that DU owed him "cold hard cash" for outing the alleged trolls. In a later posting, he, again inebriated, insulted the Administration of DU, the users of DU, stated that DU would no longer be welcomed into the fold for their lack of faith in him and the story from TruthOut.

This did not, as you might imagine, sit too well with a large number of DU members, especially those who had been here a long time and looked to DU as a real beacon of hope against the Bush Administration.

Unfortunately, much of the anger at this debacle was turned on TruthOut and Mr. Leopold himself. I feel this was unwarranted. Many of us, including myself, are still very upset at how this issue unfolded. This is the reason, I feel, for such an unusually strong pool of bitter sentiment at DU.

18. It certainly is an interesting topic to discuss. So many twists, turns,
assumptions and theories to discuss. In addition, for weeks we're promised clarification, explanation, corroboration from the source and we're given little nuggets of "teasers" instead.

My personal interest in this story came up a couple weeks after the story. I happened to be casually reading one of the 'flamey' threads started, asking whether TO had lost all credibility. While I was reading, Will Pitt made a "surprise" appearance for the first time in a couple weeks. I happened to be the first one to ask him about it... and asked him whether he stood behind the story the way that he had 2 weeks earlier.

I was.... POUNCED ON by a few people - "Who do you think you are?", "Do you even KNOW WILL PITT?", Freeper accusations, etc... just for asking a freaking question. The posts were all deleted and I ended up "making nice" with the person that was coming after me the hardest... and Will gave me some generic, yet snarky response. But it just REALLY piqued my interest after that, especially the way that simply asking a question can fuel such anger and vitriol.

So... I am keeping my eye on it - questioning however I can, watching some DUers work really hard to prove or disprove some of the claims that are being made... waiting for the WHOLE story to come out, but taking in all the "action" along the way.

19. The days of fact checking???
When was that? I've been here 3 years and there has always been a large amount of unsubstantiated garbage here. It comes from all directions, much of it from respected media outlets. That's why I can't figure out why anybody is getting their panties in a bunch over one Truthout story. They got it wrong, so friggin' what. Let it go already.

21. The Rove story is what people want to hear.
Pretty much everyone here agrees that Rove is guilty and people want so badly to believe that justice has been served, even if it is a blatantly false story by a disgraced "journalist."

Its a natural response, although you would think that by now, the sheeple would finally be willing to admit they were wrong and apologize to those of us who were right for calling us freepers, cretins and fuckshits of low mental weight.

23. Because we don't know the fucking truth!
We don't know the fucking truth about a traitorous cabal which is destroying our country from within -- in this case by eliminating an intelligence faction which was supposed to protect us, among other things, from nuclear attacks originating in Iran.

It's kinda important.
