At least some Americans are seeing clearly....
Terrorists are at large. The current conundrum is distinguishing terrorists from, well, other terrorists.
Americans seem adept at recognizing the face of terrorism on foreign soil, but we have ignored the proverbial elephant in our own house.
In 2002 the Downing Street memo exposed intensely disturbing revelations, including something strongly suspected by millions of Americans. The United States had been taken to war in Iraq because policy had been used to “fix the facts.”
Our citizenry and military had been conned. The rise of a murderous, broad-based insurgency, the deaths of Allied troops and thousands of Iraqi fatalities lead directly to the current occupant of the people’s house.
Why are we not heartsick and livid about injurious exploitations of power?
Do we dread confronting and correcting our own mistakes so much that enabling a form of state terrorism is preferable by comparison?
Our unique Constitution is strong enough to support this cherished republic through a cleansing period. To purge the White House of a treacherous administration would be the easier task in the long run.
It has become increasingly disquieting to gaze at the reflection in our communal national mirror.
