Indienet: If net neutrality dies, we will create our own internet...
I think we could actually pull it off. We would use some sort of wireless technology, and people would be responsible for their little part of the network. No centralized costs. No cost to to get on, the only price you pay is the amount needed to buy the equipment. No company to pay for internet access.

It would be something like WiFi on steroids. I think it is probably possible to create some kind of high-powered long range WiFi station.

This idea is just kind of starting out, but if other people are interested in working on it, I'm game.

9. We could use the same frequency...
and if we got enough people with enough router/transmitters we would need a signal over 100 watts, which is the FCC limit for that spectrum.

3. There has to be a way to beat this thing. The repubs are selling
everything they can get their hands on to their corporate masters. Soon you will have to pay higher and higher prices for water. Anything they can sell as a commodity they will. Anything that use to be yours for the taking will have a cost that added up puts the cost of living out of reach for many of us.

5. Have you ever heard of a "Company Store"?
Edited on Tue Jun-20-06 02:23 PM by Prag
Where they rig things up so everyone is indebted to the company... It's a form of
slavery.

I think the Corporate Masters would like to see this country wide.

4. It's an interesting idea, but
those of us who own websites want anyone to be able to connect and have the pages load quickly, whether they're connecting through AT&T or a proposed "Indienet."

That is why we need Net Neutrality and "S. 2917, the Internet Freedom Preservation Act" as the law. So AT&T can't purposely make some website load quickly and some load slowly.

Wireless mesh is the way to go as long as no one engaged in active countermeasures against it.

Wi-Pie in the sky?

Mar 9th 2006
From The Economist print edition

WE WILL not stop until every San Franciscan has access to free wireless-internet service. It was a typically bold statement from Gavin Newsom, the charismatic young mayor of San Francisco, as he announced plans in October 2004 for a Wi-Fi network that would blanket the city with wireless-internet coverage. Mr Newsom thus joined a nationwide movement of cities across America that are planning to provide wireless-broadband access for government workers, residents and businesses

11. This would be different...
because it would be its own network. It wouldn't be apart of the internet. I suppose you could patch into the internet, but you wouldn't have to.

12. Why would you want to do this?
I'd like to be able to connect to the internet without paying a company which wants to extort website owners. But why create a separate network?

13. What is the internet?
A network. It isn't special, other than its size, which allows for a lot of content.

You would want to do this because there would be no company other than the company that puts up the website.

Right now the internet uses systems owned by the phone companies to send information. There is no way right now to avoid that. All the major websites use wires owned by these phone companies.

That is why you have to create a separate network. You see why it would be better? Normal everyday people would control the network, in its entirety, not some big company.

14. what would KILL the commercial net
Edited on Tue Jun-20-06 03:34 PM by undergroundpanther
Is to offer the new net very cheap or even free.

Unregulated, but I would hope, zoned.( Not in a restricted access or speech way,but in a notification to user way, like ( dot.porn, dot sell.Dot flame.) Different zones to keep stuff separate from other stuff is considerate to users who might click one thing and get something they don't want..Never know who's surfing could be kids...but ia new net should be THE PEOPLE's NET,a haven of free for expression activism, solidarity, art and totally free of repression and censorship and maybe even free of cost and owned by EVERYONE and NO ONE..

Edited on Tue Jun-20-06 04:26 PM by originalpckelly
it would be free. And not everyone would have to pay for the equipment, or people could chip in to pay for it.
