"Proud to be an American". WHY??
While I was drifting off to sleep last night, I thought of the two missing soldiers and their families; fearing the worst about their fate. Then this morning I heard the news they had been found and although no details were given, it was clear the young men were probably tortured. I felt so sad - so very sad - and then I became angry, because what happened to them rests squarely on the shoulders of Bushco - they are responsible.

While I was driving to work I was behind a car sporting the bumpersticker "Proud to be an American" in all it's red, white and blue glory. I stared at it, and really thought about its meaning. I tried to come up with something this country has done to make me feel proud lately and I honestly couldn't think of anything. I wanted to get out of my car and drag that person out of theirs, demanding to know WHY they stuck that bumpersticker on their car, and why they were so damn proud.

Then I started thinking of everything that's happened since Bush was handed the presidency in 2000 - everything that's changed our country from one that's admired by the rest of the world to a country that's mocked and despised. There's so much I can't even begin to list it all here.

So no, I'm not feeling proud right now. And if I were to put a bumpersticker on my car, it might read "Ashamed to be an American", as I think about the lies, the loss of life, and the whittling away of our rights.

2. You probably don't have a real choice about whether or not to be American
Why sweat something you have no control over?

4. You certainly do have a choice
There are plenty of other countries that someone can move to.

8. I'd like the OP to answer for himself or herself
Many of those countries e.g. Canada and New Zealand require that you either have money or a job lined up before you can emigrate there.

although we do have control in the course this country takes; at least I want to still believe that. It's not that I don't want to live here anymore or that I don't want to be an American, it's that I hate what's been happening to my country.

3. I so agree with you about this.
In addtion, what does "Support the Troops" mean? Voluntarily pay additional taxes so they can get pay raises? Bake them cookies? Just how does one "support the troops?" I think I'll start asking this of people whose cars still sport those ribbons.

10. It has something to do with abstaining from discouraging words
about the occupation of Iraq and bush in general. They think it will help them win against Islam.

7. My 24 years
in Uniform. The glass encased flag I was presented upon my retirement. What I have done and still do to support and defend the constitution. A real proud American gets up and fights conservatives and the republican party every day.

I am not proud of what conservatives and the republican party have done to us and the world but I'm damn proud of my contributions.

Chin Up!

9. I am still proud to be an American as long as there are Americans
like us on the left. I don't consider our govt to be representative of me or millions of other truth-loving, freedom-loving Americans. We are American, maybe they aren't true Americans.

11. You can be proud of America but not proud of its government.
Just because America's values are being attacked, doesn't mean you should be any less proud of this country.

In fact, I love America even more now that this administration is attacking it.

"Proud to be an American, but NOT Proud of this Government"

14. I'm proud to be a LIBERAL American ...
That says it all -- I'm proud of the LIBERAL ideas that made this country the beacon of hope it once was, the place so many people came to because of its promise of a better future. I'm not proud of the leadership we currently endure or of the foolish people who helped put them in positions of authority. But I AM proud of what America was under liberal leadership and what it WILL BE AGAIN one day soon.

17. I'm proud Bush has such low approval ratings
I was ashamed when he had high ratings, but the lower they go the less ashamed and more proud I become.

Bush is not America. Bush and his supporters to me represent what America stands against.

Everyone opposing or exposing Bush, including whistleblowers and leakers and reporters and politicians and voters (mostly dems and occasionally republicans), is what I'm proud of.

18. Homer said it best.
Homer: We can outsmart those dolphins. Don't forget -- we invented computers, leg warmers, bendy straws, peel-and-eat shrimp, the glory hole, AND the pudding cup.

Should be enough reasons there to be proud.

20. Support the Troops?
That's easy. you buy a $1.98 magnetic sticker at your convenience store and paste it on the back bumper of your car.

Viola! insta-patriot!

Those that don't perform this patriotic ritual obviously HATE OUR COUNTRY!

Our servicemen sweating their asses off in 130 degree heat think nice thoughts of all those patriotic drivers on our interstates all simultaneously SUPPORTING OUR TROOPS. It makes their time over there go by so much more pleasantly. "They support me, they REALLY SUPPORT ME!"

22. USO has a campaign going...
Their tag line is Support the Troops = USO

I would like to ask every one of these self-righteous bastards sporting their yellow and red, white and blue "Support the Troops" ribbons if they have written a check to USO. Or, beyond the ribbon, just WHAT have they done. Surely voting for * hardly supports our soldiers.
