Two Things Certain on Immigration—

The majority of Americans do not support amnesty and want any immigrant illegally in this country to be rounded up and deported to their home country.

There are two things about that position:

The first is no one is going to want to pay what it would cost to find and deport all of the illegal immigrants currently in the US.

The second big thing is a lot of the Republicans running for congress are going to take the position for deporting all illegal immigrants…that is until after the elections this fall when it will be conveniently forgotten by the newly elected congressman.

Considering those two suppositions….I would be willing to give 2 to 1 odds that hell freezes over before there is a massive round up and deportation of illegal immigrants.

It always amazes me how the mass of Americans can get so passionate over some idea that has no way under God’s heaven of ever becoming a reality. It would be like getting stirred up over gravity.

1. A third certainty
After November 7, you're not going to hear anything else about it until February 2008.

6. Agree, and gay marriage and prayers in school, yada yada
It will be back to things as usual, corps scurrying around writing new legislation to protect them and their bootie or is that bounty?

2. There is also another tragedy here
Most immigrant farm workers in the US are here under an H2A visa. This is a non-immigrant temporary visa. What is tragic about it is that the workers have no control over this visa. The visa is requested and OWNED by the employer. The names of the workers are not attached to the visa.

What makes a worker legal or illegal is the whim of the employer. If a farm worker gets fired by an employer, he is automatically and immediately illegal. If the employer hires him back, then he is legal. The employer can hire or fire at will, making the workers legal or illegal at will.

If the employer fails to renew the visa, then the workers are automatically illegal. They have no recourse, they have no choice, they have no say in the matter.

If the employer BREAKS the law, the WORKERS get labeled as illegals.

Isn't that just peachy?

3. Last I heard, the majority did support amnesty
Agreed there'll never be a round up.

I hope.

4. What people want is a secure border
and after that is accomplished figure out what to do with those illegals that are here now. Our country can probably handle (pay for) the ones that are presently here which would include medical care, schooling, social welfare via all the means available in the U.S. be it private or govt.

There is no doubt that our borders are a joke, especially in the South. To quote bush, now that the "secrect" is out our enemy will know how to better accomplish their mission of destroying us.

5. Do you have a poll you are quoting from?
Even the polls Lou Dobbs uses say the majority of Americans DISAGREE with deporting illegal immigrants. US citizens want the borders secured but they are not too hip on rounding up and deporting the illegals. It's not clear what they want to do with the current group of illegal immigrants but I'm pretty sure they want a humane solution. Perhaps once the constant flow is stopped, Americans will feel more secure and would be willing to offer some kind of citizenship or work visas to these people.

But the bottom line is US citizens are very uncomfortable knowing that thousands of people have unfettered access to this country. Yes, it has been going on for quite sometime but the fear of terrorism is advertised daily.

7. Another thing
beside the cost there is no way to actually transport 12 million people anywhere to anywhere else if they did not want to go. Also I'm not so sure that there is actually of people who want that.
