1. So that elite power will not take over and turn a once democracy..
with checks and balances..into some elite run thing. Whose policies are more and more skewed to an elite.

2. Interesting? Naw.
Just another gold bug longing for a return to the days of a fixed money supply and international depressions. Oh yeah, it was so much better before fiat currency. :eyes:

3. progressive taxation is a good thing--those who make more should
pay more and pay their fair share, not like the Bush policy. Taxation unfortuantely does pay for the war, but it also pays for libraries, mass transit, social security, Medicare, and lots of good things that a decent society needs.

5. It's true, those green pieces of paper are worth nothing
Edited on Tue Jun-20-06 06:26 PM by Selatius
Ultimately, money greases the wheels of society. It makes people work and do things they may or may not want to do for you. They work because they need those pieces of paper because they need them to pay for food and shelter. That last part is key. People who, for instance, grow crops are willing to part with those crops if they are given enough green pieces of paper or something equivalent. It is the motor oil of society that reduces friction with the transfer of resources from one person to another.

Remember that perception is reality. Just because something is a piece of wood or a piece of paper doesn't mean it doesn't have value if people see value in it. If people are made to believe 2 + 2 does not equal 4, then they can be made to believe a lot of things.

8. Why, oh why, do we pay taxes, hmmm?
I mean, just to have bloody parking restrictions- and BUGGERY-UGLY traffic wardens, and BOLLOCKY-pedestrian-BLOODY-crossings?... and those BASTARD railings outside shops windows, making it so difficult so you can't even get in them! I mean, I know they're there to stop stupid people running into the street and killing themselves! But we're not all stupid! We don't all need nurse-maiding. I mean, why not just have a Stupidity Tax? Just tax the stupid people!
I've waited a long time to use that quote.
