AP NewsBreak: Probe finds Iraqi troops killed 2 American soldiers

SCOTT LINDLAW
Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO - Two California soldiers shot to death in Iraq in 2004 were murdered by Iraqi civil-defense officers patrolling with them, military investigators have found.

The deaths of Army Spc. Patrick R. McCaffrey Sr., 34, of Tracy and 1st Lt. Andre D. Tyson, 33, of Riverside were originally attributed to an ambush during a patrol near Balad, Iraq, on June 22, 2004.

But the Army's Criminal Investigation Division concluded there was foul play after probing the circumstances for several months.

The investigators found that one or more of the Iraqis attached to the American soldiers on patrol fired at them, a military official said Tuesday. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the military did not plan to release the report until Wednesday.

Snip...

Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., pressed the Pentagon for answers about the case when Nadia McCaffrey was unsatisfied by explanations from the military.

3. This doesn't bode well for increasing trust between US soldiers
and Iraqi police / military.

4. And this is why it's taking so long to train and arm the Iraqi military.
Because the American troops can't trust them, a)not to desert right back to the militias they came from, taking their uniforms and weapons with them, and b) not to turn their US-issue weapons on Americans. Clusterfuck, indeed.

14. You know, I am ashamed to have not thought of that...
Seriously, what is preventing these newly trained Iraqi forces from taking their training and "intel" and going right back to the insurgency? Seems very plausible and frightening indeed.

7. Since this is a two year old story you have to wonder
how many incidents like this have happened? What about the 3 soldiers that were at the check point where one was killed and the other 2 captured and now we know slaughtered? Just heard today that they were the only U.S. soldiers at that checkpoint?? Does Rummy even know what is actually happening over there? Most likely he has no idea what to do about it.

8. The fuckers tried to cover it up.
How many more incidents like this have they effectively covered up?

Another reason we desperately need to win back the congress. We must investigate and subpeona.

13. It must have slipped their minds, or
they just didn't have time to tell us because of all of the good news that's happening in Iraq.

11. Takes your mind off those two soldiers who were tortured
and executed doesn't it? Steers the attention towards those evil Iraqis who shot you in the back when you're trying to help them. This is the kind of well timed crap that will appeal to a certain segment of America who will renew their vows that killing any Iraqi for any reason is morally justified. Will the media cover it?

Will they say WHY the F•ck was this not reported on June 22, 2004 (wasn't there an election coming up?) and is it possible to believe anything we've ever been told about Iraq, or will they present it as "Democrat Party seeks to take Purple Hearts from US soldiers"?

Will the Repuke a••holes apologize to the families of these two brave soldiers? Will they apologize or be held criminally negligent for how they have treated and continue to treat our troops? Will they ever apologize for lying to the good people of this country?

Rest in Peace brothers. WE cared.

"Get the hell out of Dodge" doesn't cut it. Dodge City was never like this. But, sorry, folks. We won't be getting out of Iraq--not any time soon.

We probably put journalist out in the feild who are unarmed thru more security clearance then we do a Iraqie nationials who we train amd then arm ! These men should be treated as any other murderers would be, given a fair trial and if guilty ,since this is a milatary situation I would be in favor of the death sentence. Which should be wittnessed by all other Iraqies in their milatary that we train and arm ,to show hem exactly what happens whern you frag one of the American foot soldiers who's intentions reguardless if you support the war or not ,which I do not,are good ! Two more American lives lost needlessly in a war that should never have been .The Iraqies dont want us there and we should leave ASAP ,and let them have their civil war by themselves ,they can kill one another all they want ,bring our young men home NOW !

19. Iraqi army is standing up, and the US military is laying down
due to Iraqi army guns.

Something tells me the Iraqi army doesn't require anymore training. They know what they are doing.

20. On CNN the mother of one of the soldiers said there was a bounty
on her son's head because he was training the Iraqi forces, so it may be likely that he was killed for that reason. She had absolutely no doubt that the gov't covered up the truth.

Sorry I don't have a link--I just saw it watching CNN before work.
