HOUSE DELAYS RENEWAL OF 1965 VOTING RIGHTS ACT
Edited on Wed Jun-21-06 11:49 AM by Bluebear
WASHINGTON - House Republican leaders on Wednesday postponed a vote on renewing the 1965 Voting Rights Act after GOP lawmakers complained it unfairly singles out nine Southern states for federal oversight.

"We have time to address their concerns," Republican leaders said in a joint statement. "Therefore, the House Republican Leadership will offer members the time needed to evaluate the legislation."

It was unclear whether the legislation would come up this year. The temporary provisions don't expire until 2007, but leaders of both parties had hoped to pass the act and use it to further their prospects in the fall's midterm elections....

The amendment's backers say the requirement unfairly singles out and holds accountable nine states that practiced racist voting policies decades ago, based on 1964 voter turnout data: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas and Virginia.

15. Rather than singling out those nine states,
why not just include the same oversite requirement on all states and U.S. holdings eligible to vote. And while we're at it, why the frig don't we throw in voting rights for D.C. citizens while we're at it.

21. There's a well thought out position on this among supporters.
Doing that takes the focus off of these nine states. It's hard enough to enforce now, let alone with
DOJ having the chance to say, "Oh, sorry, we're investigating Oregon."

It's counter-intuitive at first glance but in a "war is peace" "up is down" 1984 administration bent
on CONTRACTING the franchise of minorities, focus is the issue.

You make a good point about the need for REAL voting rights to include the elimination of rigged voting
machines, the mandatory use of exit polls to catch fraud, the ability of all citizens to watch counting and tabulating, etc. etc.

That's a challenge but must be done.

24. Ahhhhh, okay. Good point.
Though, as you said, a bit "counter-intuitive." And a sad commentary on how "our government" sees/treats "We, the People."

Thanks for letting me know that. I wouldn't want contribute to anything, through my ignorance, that would dilute fully guaranteed and proven voting rights.

The best exercise in government obfuscation is the Patriot Act. I tried to read it, rather than commentaries and then realized why you need a commentary. It's just a bunch of amendments.

There needs to be a law - Legislation must be written as narrative in plain English!

Cheers...

CALL CONGRESS NOW AND DEMAND PASSAGE OF
THE VOTING RIGHTS ACT. THE REPUBLICAN EXTREMISTS
HAVE HIJACKED IT.

18. The main opponent of the bill is none other than Lynn Westmoreland
Edited on Wed Jun-21-06 09:34 PM by Hippo_Tron
"A lot of it looks as if these are some old boys from the South who are trying to do away with it," said Representative Lynn Westmoreland of Georgia, who said it would be unfair to keep Georgia under the confines of the law when his state has cleaned up its voting rights record. "But these old boys are trying to make it constitutional enough that it will withstand the scrutiny of the Supreme Court."

Yea Lynn it's really unfair to keep your state under the "confines" of the law, like allowing black people to vote.

BTW Lynn I keep having trouble remembering my ten commandments. Do you think that you could help me?

I swear to god in one short week this unknown congressman has made himself national;y renowned for being the biggest fucking moron in congress.

Voting Rights Renewal Hijacked in House - Call Congress Today!

Leadership Conference on Civil Rights

June 21, 2006

June 21, 2006 -- Just a few hours ago, a small band of extremists in the House of Representatives hijacked H.R. 9, the bill to renew and restore the Voting Rights Act. The House was expected to vote on the bill today.

Call your representative NOW at (202) 224-3121. Tell your representative: Congress must get the Voting Rights Act renewal back on track, and should not recess until it gets the job done. I urge you to fully support H.R. 9 and oppose any harmful amendments.

23. Didn't see that and I'm adding some racist quotes from those opposing it
snip:
But the bill was delayed after objections from the Texas lawmakers to the requirement that the state must get permission, or "preclearance," from the Justice Department or a federal court before making changes to voting standards, practices or procedures.

The rule was aimed at states with a history of discrimination in voting. Six states were targeted when the law was originally passed in 1965: Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Virginia. Texas, Arizona and Alaska were added in 1975, when the law was expanded to protect people who have limited knowledge of English.

"I don't think we have racial bias in Texas anymore," said Rep. John Carter, R-Round Rock.

snip:
Several Texas Republicans also objected to the law's requirement that jurisdictions print ballots in other languages if 5 percent or more of their voting-age populations have limited English skills.

"I simply believe you should be able to read, write and speak English to be a voter in the United States," Carter said.

I'm still amazed that these people even got elected

26. Texas is my home and I love it, but having lived in other states....
can tell you for a fact that racism is alive and well here. I have seen more overt racism in Texas than I ever did in Mississippi. In Biloxi, MS, during the summertime debates/protests over waving the Confederate flag, there were citizens of every ethnicity yelling at each other, but it was basically just over the right to wave that flag. It was not the everyday in-the-workplace-nasty-racial-jokes.

I'll be calling my Rep to support H.R. 9
