GORE's Documentary Will Recieve Rare "Humanitas Prize"
Edited on Wed Jun-21-06 08:56 PM by kpete
Al Gore's documentary wins special award

LOS ANGELES - The Al Gore documentary "An Inconvenient Truth" will receive a rare recognition from the Humanitas Prize, which honors screenwriting that helps "liberate, enrich and unify society."

"An Inconvenient Truth," which chronicles Gore's quest to draw attention to global warming, will receive the organization's first Special Award in over 10 years, president Frank Desiderio announced Wednesday.

"It's a very important film," he said in a statement. "We want to shine a light on it."
The documentary's director, Davis Guggenheim, said he was "thrilled" with the recognition, adding that Humanitas "supports the achievements and sacrifices of filmmakers trying to change the world."

Since 1974, the Humanitas Prize has presented awards and grants to TV and film writers whose fictional work reflects "the positive values of life." Documentaries are occasionally recognized with Special Awards. The last such honors went to Bill Moyers and Judith Davidson Moyers in 1995 for their documentary "What Can We Do About Violence."

1. How fitting for his work.
I hope more single subject focus documentaries are made on GOP control of media and voting machines. Cuz that's the only way we can do what needs to be done to stop global warming.

Gore gave us the answer of HOW to do it.

6. I like your take on the film.
I just saw it this afternoon, and as I watched it I was impressed at how Gore integrated the whole concept of this environmental disaster in the making with its effects on such sociological necessities for human existence as agriculture, species survival and loss of habitable land mass to rising sea levels. If we could deal with this problem, the standard of living for the entire world could be improved, and when people live better the tendency toward war and totalitarianism diminishes. I would cite WWII as a prime example. I wonder if that war would have ever occurred if Hitler had not been able to appeal to the German people's anxiety over the depressed state of their economy at that time. In short, I think Gore's An Inconvenient Truth is as much a metaphor for global stabilization at the sociological level as it is an entreaty for action on the issue of global warming. With this view in mind, it occurs to me that Al Gore has managed to find a way to serve as President without actually holding the office. My hat is off to you, President Gore.   :toast:

8. absolutely!
So many of the things which are causing global warming are harming us in other ways. For example, urban sprawl encourages wasting fossil fuels, and it also destroys the downtowns of cities, creates other types of air pollution like smog (affecting human health), and is linked with underfunded school systems and "exurbs"/edge cities which are so spread out that the residents feel isolated and uninvolved. I think Gore has done a terrific job of showing how global warming is just one symptom of a way of life which has gone seriously wrong ... and that we can gain a lot if we do something about the causes.

21. I didn't say that
I meant that it didn't come off as a doomsday message, but rather a call to action. It doesn't insinuate futility.

11. a well-deserved recognition!

Such an important film, because those in power do not understand global warming and do not care. We need a leader who does. Hmmm, I wonder who that could be....

Bush Crime Family. They've already made their choice, and it isn't mother earth.

had the polar bear sketch.

Pretty soon it will be too hot to have gold bars it will have to be sold in cups and bowls because of it being a constant liquid state.
