Did my local NPR station engage in blatant censorship today?
I had a really wierd experience this morning listening to a Syracuse NPR station while on a break. The Diane Rehm show came on. I will not go into the details of the program, except to say that it featured a pair of guests who are extremely controversial and covered subject matter that the MSM has treated as practically taboo. I was actually extremely surprised that she would even be taking on this particular issue and these particular guests.

A couple of minutes into the interview, an anouncer suddenly broke in to say that the broadcast tower was being shut down for maintenence, and some wierd music station came on in the show's place. When I tuned back in a couple of hours later (I drive around alot for my job), the regular programming was running again.

I've never witnessed anything like this before with this station. The whole thing felt extremely surreal. Have I just become overly paranoid, or does this sound like they were deliberately censoring a program that they considered too controversial to air?

1. I had the same thing happen to me with AAR last week...
I was driving around and at 4pm, Sam Seder comes on. Tom Hartmann was filling in and at 5pm. AAR was cut and the local station had this wierd guy on for an hour. Then it went back to AAR at 6pm. I thought it was really strange. I've never experienced that with the local AAR station.

2. I'm sure they don't do maintenance during
the morning drive time. No radio station would do that.

6. It wasn't really morning drive time.
I work as a home health aide, and drive from client to client and listen to the radio while driving. The show runs at 10:00 here.

5. I don't want this getting kicked to the I/P forum
That's why I'm being a little cryptic, but it was John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt who recently wrote an extremely controversial article about the influence of the Israel lobby on American foreign policy.

I'm not interested in discussing or debating the issue here, but they have been kind of demonized in the media, and the subject is generally treated as taboo, or at least that's been my impression. I was very surprised when she anounced her guests and discussion topic.

7. AAR
I just wish they had a stronger signal out here on Long Island. It's so crappy out here you can hardly hear it at times. Where is George Soros when you need him?

8. I don't think we get AAR out here.
I listened to AAR when I was in Colorado, and would never listen to NPR if I could get it here. Maybe I haven't looked hard enough.

11. No nothing but rightwing spew
on talk here in CNY. AAR is available on satellite which may be a worthy expense if you are on the road a lot, I've heard it on XM radio.

10. I recall that Goebbels did the same thing.
Music instead of news to quite the masses.

13. Thanks.
I should have mentioned that I looked it up on the web and listened to it as soon as I got home.

I'm very glad that the internet allows me to bypass acts of censorship by local radio stations, but I still find the censorship extrememly disturbing.
