Are there any good ISPs?
One which promises to maintain Net Neutrality even if Congress says it's legal to extort website owners?

One which gives more to Democrats than Republicans?

1. Ask speakeasy.
I'm betting the answers to both questions is yes in their case.

2. I am using copper
It is little known, no frills, low cost, and off the radar because it is not a major player.

4. My solution was to tap into my neighbor's
WiFi. I dont call it stealing if you actively put it in MY house.

It may even be invasion!

but, it certainly works for me (I seem to have eight neighbors with unsecured wireless networks).

5. Just 'cause you're a good person and I think you're okay...
you might want to change that to 'I know somebody' rather than claim it. Prying eyes...you know ;)

So, my ISP decided to upgrade their DSL modem version and required that we either drive there and pick up the new modem or have a tech come and install it. We could either pick it up at their office between 9 and 5 pm or the tech could install it between 9 and 5, weekdays.

both my partner and I work two jobs between 6am and 10pm, at least six days per week. In the end, we cancelled the DSL service since we couldnt use it.

About three weeks ago I got a new Vaio with WiFi and I fired it up (not actually knowing it had a built-in wireless transciever) and XP popped a little window open saying "six unsecured wireless networks available, 'CONNECTED'". I ran with it.

I honestly feel that if youre not technologically advanced enough to enable WEP encryption and have a WiFi, while at the same time providing my laptop with your service, its mime for the taking. Shit, its in my house.

I should also say that I've never tried, or even thought about until now, to connect to a specific computer on the network, nor do I want to (what could they possibly have that I'd want to see?). There's absolutely no malice in my method, just opportunism.

I honestly believe I've got an agruable perspective on it.

educate me if I'm wrong.

Edit to add: thanks for your vote of confidence on my character, by the way. You're the best :hi:

7. All I'm saying is...
If you're using service that you are supposed to pay for I wouldn't advertise it publicly like this.

That's what I surmised from your post.

No, that was some guy my third cousin was saying he heard about while he picked up some dog food six or seven weeks ago. Gosh, its been so long ago, I could have the story all wrong. Actually, now that I think about it, he may have been talking about where you can get nice swim trunks for cheap.

What was this thread about, anyway?

edit: ethanol-influenced spelling.

11. yup.
you'll read above, that my new laptop just spontaneously announced that I suddenly had internet connectivity and it worked.

So I use it a little. I am not home very much, but when I'm doing some web research or journal searches (or a need a DU fix) I just fire it up. I worked 17 today and Im getting a little drunk and Im not going in till 8 tomorrow, so Im getting my fix tonight.

I doubt anybody notices (Im not sure they even understand that they have 'wireless')

13. It wont help...
ISP's are not the problem - the problem are the major carriers that provide the backbone to the ISP's. Sure some of those companies are also ISP's but the majority of ISP's are simply reselling bandwidth. So if the carrier decides to throttle "second class" traffic, then the ISP will have no option.
