Short but excellent commentary on "cut and run"

Cut and Run? You Bet.
By Lt. Gen. William E. Odom

Why America must get out of Iraq now.

Withdraw immediately or stay the present course? That is the key question about the war in Iraq today. American public opinion is now decidedly against the war. From liberal New England, where citizens pass town-hall resolutions calling for withdrawal, to the conservative South and West, where more than half of “red state” citizens oppose the war, Americans want out. That sentiment is understandable.

The prewar dream of a liberal Iraqi democracy friendly to the United States is no longer credible. No Iraqi leader with enough power and legitimacy to control the country will be pro-American. Still, U.S. President George W. Bush says the United States must stay the course. Why? Let’s consider his administration’s most popular arguments for not leaving Iraq.

If we leave, there will be a civil war. In reality, a civil war in Iraq began just weeks after U.S. forces toppled Saddam. Any close observer could see that then; today, only the blind deny it. Even President Bush, who is normally impervious to uncomfortable facts, recently admitted that Iraq has peered into the abyss of civil war. He ought to look a little closer. Iraqis are fighting Iraqis. Insurgents have killed far more Iraqis than Americans. That’s civil war.

Withdrawal will encourage the terrorists. True, but that is the price we are doomed to pay. Our continued occupation of Iraq also encourages the killers—precisely because our invasion made Iraq safe for them. Our occupation also left the surviving Baathists with one choice: Surrender, or ally with al Qaeda. They chose the latter. Staying the course will not change this fact. Pulling out will most likely result in Sunni groups’ turning against al Qaeda and its sympathizers, driving them out of Iraq entirely.

1. GOPer talking points countered
"if we cut/run - troops would have died in vain"
my response "is it better to die for a lie?"

"Stay the course means more of the same."
Problem with staying the course in Iraq is that there is NO COURSE to stay. No plan other than to Lie and watch troops die - more of the same.

"support our troops"
then show some support, our troops need and deserve the proper equipment, a realistic plan beyond crossing our fingers, and competent leadership

"when Iraqis stand up we'll stand down"
Why should Iraqis stand up when we are there to do it for them?

fact of the matter is Iraq is a freaking mess. The premise which was used to invade Iraq is a lie. We are not making progress. Even if it's not officially recognized as a civil war - it's a civil war. There are no plans. GOP Congress refuses to hold the bushies accountable for anything.

meanwhile - Afghanistan is falling apart. Bin-laden is still out there. And the terrorists are spreading out to even more countries.

4. I do not think Bush is sure enough of himself to leave.
He seems to be a man who gets a thing in his head and he is in fear of thinking any thing that moves this thought even one degree. He seems only to do some thing like that if forced into it. Does that not show a man who is very unsure what to think about things? If you can not hear all sides of a problem you must be in fear of them and that is what we have been told about him from all these books to come from the WH.

5. we can't afford it
Its that simple. Its not a question of "if", but that it is an out-of-pocket expense
where bush has triple-overspent the limit, and the credit companies are gonna show
up in iraq, with the new law and all on banruptcy, and they'll be taking back all the
gear. So unless the soldiers like to stay the course naked in asia, its time to
bring them home.

The war is a luxury, and we have other priorities than losing our civil society for
the white man's ego and his terrorism.

6. I say to hypocritical neocons who want to "stay the course"...............
....."Fine, I know where the Army and Marine recruiter's office is and I'll take you there so you don't loose your way. Then you can sign up and go to Afghanistan or Iraq and we can bring a Democrat home." :patriot:

If they reply with something like I choose to serve here at home in other ways then I go on to say, "Oh, so you're fearless and patriotic like that idiotic WH Squatter and his Handler until you're asked to put your hide on the line."

Oh, and I get REALLY MEAN on purpose by going on to say, "In other words you're nothing but a hypocrite, go back to your sand box."

I'm mean with neocons, I hate them creatures.:banghead:

7. You people STILL don't get it!
Everything is going perfectly according to plan!

The agenda was ALWAYS to destroy government and privatize EVERYTHING.
Drive up the deficit to unmanageable levels, ruin any credibility this country had, kill off the middle class and half the people on the planet and then buy up everything left at fire-sale prices.

It's all going swimmingly well...
