An animated map of Iraq casualties
Edited on Thu Jun-22-06 07:12 AM by Ian_rd
This is a beautiful gem I tripped over searching around for Iraq stats. A graphic artist named Tim Klimowicz took a map of Iraq and added a flash of red at each location of a Coalition soldier's death upon an animated timeline.

See the animation: http://www.obleek.com/iraq/index.html

This is almost like watching some kind of morbid fireworks show. Imagine these flashes of light going off in the air behind President Bush as he strides the USS Abraham Lincoln in his flight suit with the 1812 Overture playing.

2. the data graphics of death
Edward Tufte, the pioneer of datagraphics, uses this example by Charles Joseph Minard, which portrays the deaths in Napoleon's army when he marched to Russia in 1812.

The band starts out thick but as the soldiers die, the band narrows. The lower band, which is dark, is tied to temperature and time.
