Marine charged with Murder says he's scared.
http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/IraqCoverage/story?id=2106286&page=1

"Life is flashing before his eyes," said Erica Thomas, wife of Marine Cpl. Trent D. Thomas. "And he is scared and not knowing exactly what is going on. He keeps asking me, 'What's happening? What is the news saying?' What is his lawyer saying? He's worried."

Thomas, six Marines and a Navy corpsman are accused of murder, kidnapping, assault, conspiracy, larceny and housebreaking in the death of a 52-year-old disabled Iraqi man named Hashim Ibrahim Awad in the town of Hamdania in April.

---------------------

According to witnesses, the Marines dragged Awad from his home in the middle of the night and shot him repeatedly. Witnesses said the Marines then planted a stolen shovel and an AK-47 rifle on his body to make it look like he was an insurgent killed as he was planting a roadside bomb.

4. One of the Marines is from my town.
Story is getting a lot of local air time. If they are guilty as charged it is a shameful event. The biggest shame is that Georgie Boy hasn't been charged as an accessory!

19. I would assume the military
doesn't put someone of trial for 'murder' in a war zone, without some pretty solid evidence.

Just like we would never imagine that a US President would expose an American intelligence operation to our enemies for political gain, but that happened as well.

35. Should be interesting..
I'm still not even remotely believing the charges without some type of proof, but if it has been released that confessions were made, It goes a long way to convincing me.

Looking forward to seeing the confession and praying the accusations aren't true. If they are, the marine should be scared because death is in his near future.

I refuse to jump to conclusions without proof. If you don't need that proof thats great, I do.

I was misled about why we were going to war with proof and now you want me to eagerly accept this as well?

I think not.

Talking to a republican: "No moron, I don't hate the troops or America, No moron, I don't support al qaeda". It's like talking to a third grader sometimes.

Yes, I'll wait a while, I enjoy a good debate.

36. Investigation is done. Conducted by NCIS
Now they have to conduct an article 32 hearing, which is the military version of a grand jury hearing. If the charges are upheld by the hearing then it goes to a court martial. The trial will determine guilt or innocence.

Are you one of those that believe that the NCIS investigation was padded? That seems to be the consensus of at least one of the defense lawyers.

11. Clearly, there's an absence of leadership here, for starters
The others facing charges are Sgt. Lawrence G. Hutchins III; Marine Cpl. Navy Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Melson J. Bacos; Marine Lance Cpl. Tyler A. Jackson; Marine Pfc. John J. Jackson; Marine Lance Cpl. Jerry E. Shumate Jr.; Marine Lance Cpl. Robert B. Pennington; and Marine Cpl. Marshall L. Magincalda.

Where's their superior officer? The kid has done THREE TOURS in Iraq. That would drive anyone batshit crazy. It doesn't excuse the alleged actions, but it does go a ways towards explaining them.

Looks like just a squad, and Sgt Hutchins III, would have been the one in charge. Usually you won't find an officer below the platoon level, unless personnel are really shorthanded.

40. Well, I hate to turn us into the Turkish Army, but perhaps some
of the platoon leaders ought to start going out with their subordinates every now and again. It seems a bit of a challenge to evaluate someone when you've not seen them in a combat environment. You have to wonder if the brass ever go outside the wire??? It's a rare day indeed when you see a commissioned officer's name on the casualty lists, and more so lately.

18. Welcome to my world, Marine
I've been scared and pissed and angry and a lot of other emotions for about five years, on a continuous, ongoing basis. I know that my country is committing a serious act against itself that might actually result in suicide if it isn't stopped. And as many problems as I see in the good old U.S. of A., I'm not quite ready to flush it down the tubes yet.

And if you did what you're accused of doing Mr. Thomas, your removal from the general population will be a net benefit to the mess we're currently in.

21. It's guys like this
that screw up a perfectly good occupation. I mean, we invade an unarmed country, pretend it's (ehem, ehem) a "war," and get to kill people for free. Then this knucklehead comes along and spoils the party for everyone. Getting busted like this casts a dim light over some otherwise legitimate brutalizing in the name of FREEDOM.

There's just no justice in this world.

Unless it's the wild west run amok in Iraq, he follows a chain of command and the very least, the commanding officer must harbor responsibility for what his/her men do.

And I suspect that they've been ordered to spread terror and get some git back, also with wild abandon.

It's degenerated into something truly ghastly over there, this is just one such story.

And not in the old definiton of "inspiring awe". I've seen more sympathy for convicted murderers than for this marine.

Well, so much for the understanding of society. Why not just put him on the drumhead to show our friends in Iraq we are willing to sacrifice our sons to show our commitment to justice.

48. This is not the Haditha trial...
Remember there are now many, many incidents under investigation. They are not all Haditha incidents in either the depravity of the murders or the quality of the evidence.

I wouldn't put it past Rumsfeld to make sure that the most innocent of incidents are the only ones that see public trial - and the most depraved incidents will be hushed up.
