Fighting for Detainees at Guantanamo

Fresh Air from WHYY, June 22, 2006 · Civil rights lawyer Joseph Margulies' new book is Guantanamo and the Abuse of Presidential Power. Margulies has represented several prisoners held at Guantanamo Bay Detention Center, and he believes that current U.S. policy is a legal and ethical disaster. He says that few new prisoners are arriving at Guantanamo, but the population at Bagram prison in Afghanistan is growing rapidly.

Really riveting and well worth the time spent. You know it's good when you can't get out of your own driveway! This is a shocking expose on the judicial(?) procedures in place. It all sounds more like Stalinist Russia - well, listen and hear for yourself.

1. Someone? Anyone? Did anyone else hear this today?

Some of these detainees have been there for years. They have not had counsel made available to them . They have not presented with the charges. They have not been allowed to defend themselves. Some of them are there due to confessions that were obtained through rendition and torture. If you heard the same stories recounted by this attorney and substituted the name of any OTHER country for the US, you would be up in arms.
