Pro-Israel Donors Rally For Joe, as Left Takes Aim
http://www.forward.com/main/printer-friendly.php?id=7999
From Forward, Jewish Weekly published in New York.

With Senator Joseph Lieberman facing an increasingly tight primary fight, pro-Israel interest groups are stepping up their support for the former vice presidential candidate.

Lieberman will face Ned Lamont — a Greenwich, Conn., multimillionaire backed by party liberals unhappy with Lieberman's support for the Iraq War and perceived coziness with Republicans — in Connecticut's August 8 Democratic primary. While polls still predict that the three-term senator will win the contest handily, Lamont's steadily rising poll numbers, as well as the low turnout projected for a midsummer election, has Lieberman supporters rallying to his defense.

"Given the recent turn of events, we have decided to become further engaged in this race," Dr. Ben Chouake said. Chouake is president of Norpac, a nonpartisan, New Jersey-based political action committee that supports pro-Israel candidates. "We're going to contact our membership in the area, see if they can organize some voting drives on the ground, as well as do additional fund raising for his campaign."

Dr. Mandell Ganchrow, the head of the pro-Israel New York-based Hudson Valley Political Action Committee, told the Forward that "people are taking this race very seriously." A former president and chairman of the Orthodox Union, Ganchrow added that he thinks Lieberman "understands that he's in for a very tough race."

<snip>

Charles Schumer of New York who has signaled his support for Lieberman has not respond to the Forward's questions about whether he would support the Connecticut lawmaker if he runs in the general election as an independent. Schumer, head of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has upset liberal bloggers by failing to state unequivocally that the party will back Lamont if he wins the primary and Lieberman runs as an independent.

Joe has some friends.
Let's hope Lamont has more. The kind that vote. and live in Conn.

14. Here's one CT Yankee with a Jewish husband and 3 Jewish grand children
who is for Lamont all the way.

Lamont is no anti-semite. Joe is now a republican. This is simple, IMHO.

3. If Latinos were rallying for a Latino incumbent
the freepers would question their patriotism.

4. I'm planning on throwing an extra 50 dollars at Lamont
as soon as I get my next paycheck. This is an extra added incentive. (I doubt very much that Ned is anti-Israeli, but I expect that he at least won't be slavishly devoted to a narrow set of Israeli political interests.)

6. He should just move to Israel.
Edited on Thu Jun-22-06 06:04 PM by sparosnare
That's not meant as anything derogatory, I just think he'd be much happier there. He's no longer welcome in the Democratic Party.

I am Jewish and Pro-Israel and would vote Lamont in a heart beat. People are very insensitive to this issue and Jewish interests in general on this board though. If Cynthia McKinney or a latino was running for office and it said "african Americans" or "latinos" rallying in support....we wouldn't see posts deriding them for it. People who are supportive of Israel and Jewish people are both some of the rock solid base of this party. Some of this is just unfair. I say this as someone who sent money to Lamont.

9. My apologies.
I in no way meant to be insensitive and at this point a full retraction of my idiotic comment is best. I get so damn tired of Lieberman though and really wish he would just go away. Anywhere. :-)

10. I can relate
I am sick of his stupid ass too. He is to the right of the beliefs of most jewish voters and especially Jewish members of congress and the senate! He is a disgrace to the Democratic Party.

16. I live in Joe's former neighborhood and I walked the precinct to
get signatures for Ned on the ballot. I rang doorbells of congregants of Joe's synagogue here in New Haven. We had a pleasant interaction. Several declined to sign and I thanked them for listening to my pitch and moved on. It was a very nice experience. They described themselves as "personal friends of JOe" but they were the most polite, sensitive and nice political foes you would ever want!

The whole experience made me so happy I live in a tolerant, liberal and progressive community!

12. Thank you for retracting your comment.
I too am caught in a vise - love Israel, loathe Jagoff Joe. It pains me when people overplay the Israel card when bashing Joe. There are so many OTHER reasons to bash him.

13. There are plenty of other reasons to bash him.
Even aside from both his support for Israeli extremism and the Iraq war.

does it pain you to see where he is getting support? and who is applauding his support for Bush policies in the Middle East?

17. My patience with the kind of garbage you dish out is limited.
If you want to kick pro-Israel Democrats out of the party, you won't like the results. Jimmy Carter and his acolytes found that out the hard way.

19. I am not in the position to kick anyone out of the party.
This ain't Party Central... well, except when we clear the living room and and hook up the music.

I don't anyone is really in a position to kick anyone out of the Party. So that's why Joe can be a member as well as Cynthia Mckinney.

18. I'm certainly not attacking Jews...
...but if the U.S. government supported blacks or latinos on a per-capita basis the way it supports Israelis, there might be some of the same talk here...

15. What LOONEYMAN inspired me to do today.
Edited on Thu Jun-22-06 07:37 PM by Joe Bacon
I'm pulling out my MasterCard and giving Ned Lamont another $100.

Today. Liberman showed the world just how sleazy he is.

He stabbed ME in the back for the last time.

Even Ann Coulter has endorsed him for re-election.

This is the last straw for Fifth Columnist Joe.

I now hate him even more than I hate Santorum,

STAND UP FOR AMERICA, STAND WITH LAMONT AND SEND LOONEYMAN PACKING
