RI senate: Chafee and Laffey in dead heat for republican nomination
"PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Sen. Lincoln Chafee has lost ground among Republicans and faces a serious primary challenge from Cranston Mayor Stephen Laffey in his battle for re-election, according to a Rhode Island College poll released Thursday."

"Republicans favor Laffey by a margin of nearly 2-1, and he would win the party's nomination if only they cast ballots in the primary, the poll by the college's Bureau of Government Research and Service predicted. Even if a large number of unaffiliated voters, who favor Chafee, cast ballots in the Republican primary, the results would be too close to call."

"I think Chafee's the one (senator) who's most in danger of losing his primary," said Peter Ubertaccio, a political science professor at Stonehill College in Easton, Mass., who follows national Senate races."

WE WANT LAFFEY TO WIN THE NOMINATION. WHITEHOUSE (D) WOULD DESTROY HIM IN THE GENERAL ELECTION.

1. I sure hope the 14,000+ Democrats that have switched to registered

Independent or Republican in RI are all planning on voting for Laffey, not Chafee.

"More than 14,500 Rhode Island Democrats have switched their voter affiliations within the past six months to participate in the Sept. 12 Republican primary, a figure that experts say will probably help incumbent Sen. Lincoln D. Chafee in his campaign against Cranston Mayor Stephen P. Laffey.

State elections records compiled by the secretary of state's office show that 13,596 Democrats switched their affiliations to independent -- or unaffiliated in the state's political argot -- which would make them eligible to vote in the primary. An additional 987 Democrats switched to Republican, thus making them eligible to vote in the GOP primary."

4. It would be VERY STUPID for a dem to vote for Chafee in the primary
I hope DUers can get the word out.

If Laffey wins the republican primary Whitehouse (D) will easily win the general election.

6. yes, but Independents are the ones who will be the deciding factors
rather than Dems. According to statistics for this poll. Most voters in Rhode Island consider themselves independents and they can choose to vote in either primary.

2. If Chafee loses the primary and given that Laffey is very conservative
then I would think that this would be an almost certain democratic gain in November. We would start off the board with two probable pickups--Pennsylvania and Rhode Island. Go Laffey!

8. Diebold is in VA and a dem was elected there in 05.
Kaine (D) was barely leading in the pre-election polls too.

We did well in 05, we can do well in 06.
