The Politcal Compass - take the quiz
http://www.politicalcompass.org /

There's abundant evidence for the need of it. The old one-dimensional categories of 'right' and 'left', established for the seating arrangement of the French National Assembly of 1789, are overly simplistic for today's complex political landscape. For example, who are the 'conservatives' in today's Russia? Are they the unreconstructed Stalinists, or the reformers who have adopted the right-wing views of conservatives like Margaret Thatcher ?

On the standard left-right scale, how do you distinguish leftists like Stalin and Gandhi? It's not sufficient to say that Stalin was simply more left than Gandhi. There are fundamental political differences between them that the old categories on their own can't explain. Similarly, we generally describe social reactionaries as 'right-wingers', yet that leaves left-wing reactionaries like Robert Mugabe and Pol Pot off the hook...

The idea was developed by a political journalist with a university counselling background, assisted by a professor of social history. They're indebted to people like Wilhelm Reich and Theodor Adorno for their ground-breaking work in this field. We believe that, in an age of diminishing ideology, a new generation in particular will get a better idea of where they stand politically - and the sort of political company they keep.

7. I must protest the right-wing bias of the compass.
Economic Left/Right: -9.0
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -9.13

Why are we freedom-loving, peace-loving, fellow-man loving lefties represented by NEGATIVE numbers, when the fascist, authoritarian, oppressive righties are denoted by POSITIVE numbers. I sense a theme; nay, a plot; nay a conspiracy. A Global Conspiracy. You have been warned.

Time for my welbutrin.

11. It seems funny that there is nobody they list in the lower right...
Edited on Fri Jun-23-06 09:32 PM by bloom
I suppose Ron Paul would be there.

On the Book list is:

Milton Friedman
"The only social responsibility of a corporation is to deliver a profit to its shareholders"

Ayn Rand
...whose works of non-fiction, and novels like The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged, voiced her fierce hatred of social safety nets and the governments that provide them.

Ludwig Von Mises
The Anti-Capitalistic Mentality
Von Mises, who has championed the free market probably more deeply than any other thinker, argues that people whose ambitions haven't been fulfilled blame the System.

----

People against safety nets - are who I usually associate with libertarianism. That - and people who put their privileges over others rights. (But that is thinking of "left libertarianism" as "liberal" - not as "libertarianism".

This thread was inspired by:

"I am against EVERYTHING a libertarian stands for..."

12. P.S. It is more clear what the confusion is with this graphic:

Where you have Libertarianism at opposite sides of Communism AND you have Libertarian at opposite sides of Authoritarianism.

It's no wonder people are confused.

_I_ think of Libertarianism as opposite of Communism - where it could also be called "Selfishism" (at least then - people would know what we're talking about - or I would - anyway :) ).

13. a libertarian-anarchist or right-wing neoliberal?
Edited on Fri Jun-23-06 10:31 PM by flaminbats
something tells me a neoliberal libertarian isn't on the right and that a communist anarchist isn't on the left.

This is an interesting poll, but IMO it would be better for the social issues with Nazism against liberalism, and for economics..fascism against socialism.

My score was -5.38..putting me between PWRinNY and NJ Democrats on the economic issues and -2.46 between HypnoToad and FloridaPat on the social issues.
