(June 23, 2006) - - It was decision day for thousands of auto workers across the nation, as General Motors' buy-out deadline hit Friday afternoon.
Hundreds of workers at the GM Powertrain plant in the Town of Tonawanda signed papers to leave their jobs Friday.
General Motors offered the buy-out deal, worth up to $140,000, for workers to retire early, and give up health care benefits.
Up to 30,000 employees nationwide were expected to take the deal.
GM Powertrain employee Paul Kowal said, "They're saying 1 out of 3, or 1 out of 4 in the plant are gonna take it."
GM Powertrain employee Artice McDowell said, "Sad to see some of them leave, but 30 years is a long time."
A deadline also hit for Delphi employees to take an early retirement deal Friday.
The Delphi buy-out deadline is late next month.
