Iraq Veterans Facing Homelessness

Iraq Veterans Facing Homelessness

Snip...

"I'm just an ordinary person who served. I'm not embarrassed about my homelessness, because the circumstances that created it were not my fault," said Beckford, 30, who was a military-supply specialist at a base in Iraq that was a sitting duck for around-the-clock attacks, "where hell was your home."

Snip...

Former Army Pfc. Herold Noel had nowhere to call home after returning from Iraq last year. He slept in his Jeep, parked anywhere in New York "where I wouldn't get a ticket."

"Then the nightmares would start," said the 26-year-old, who drove a military fuel truck in Iraq -- one of the war's most dangerous jobs.

At one point, he saw a friend's leg get blown off. "I saw a baby decapitated when it was run over by a truck. I relived that every night," said Noel, who walks with shrapnel in his knee and suffers from severe post-traumatic stress syndrome.

To help people like Noel, the VA gives grants to nonprofit, private housing organizations that offer about 8,000 free beds nationwide. The space isn't always enough to accommodate everyone in desperate need of shelter among the more than 500,000 vets of Iraq and Afghanistan who have been discharged from the military so far.

1. Probably all those gay marriages that are keeping the vets on the streets
Yeah, that's the ticket. Or once that estate tax is permanently lifted the money will trickle down in torrents and our vets can get the care they deserve.

Or maybe it'll happen when we make the Holy Bible the official religious book of the U.S.A.

3. Way to support the troops, America
This shameful situation has been going on for at least a couple of years under Bush**, who's more interested in cutting services to our vets than seeing they're treated with dignity after he's used them up in his wars.

I hope this is on the Dems' radar....

While Sen McCain proposes legislation like this:

Support the troops my ass. This republican administration and congress should spend a few days in Pfc Noel's boots. What I don't get is that McCain has. He must have forgot.

IIRC Mc Cain came from a solid, high ranking Navy family. I doubt he even shined his own 'boots'.

15. McCain was the first of three generations NOT to make FLAG RANK
He was almost the anchorman (last) at the Academy, and lost three planes, one in training (which would have axed anyone else from flight school), one on the Forest Fire (AKA Forrestal, though that was due to a massive fire on deck) and the third one that landed him in the Hilton.

His father and grandfather were capable and talented officers.

When he got home, he worked at OLA, and he was a complete shithead in the job. Rude as hell to staff, a gen-u-wine whoremaster, too. It did whet his appetite, though, for life on the Hill.

before marrying the woman he was cheating with, didn't he?
Give the man some credit.

16. He was a POW, though.
As much as I don't like McCain, and that's a lot, he should do something for our returning troops. I searched his legislation, and the closest he came was renaming the Naval Academy the Navy Academy or some such.
What an asshole.

His dad was CINCUSNAVEUR at the time, a high viz job, and daddy didn't trade him to get him out of his five-plus years in the pits....

The Pentagon under this administration has made it abuntly clear that their budget is to benifit their cronies in the private sector and to hell with our GI's.

What a vile pig Roskem is for saying "homeless veterans bring it on themselves". I hope Duckworth buries him on election day.
