3. That's just excellent
So simple and moving.

If you love this land of the free
Bring 'em home, bring 'em home
Bring 'em back from overseas
Bring 'em home, bring 'em home

It'll make the politicians sad I know
Bring 'em home, bring 'em home
They want to tangle with a foe
Bring 'em home, bring 'em home

They want to test the grand theory
Bring 'em home, bring 'em home
With the blood of you and me
Bring 'em home, bring 'em home......

5. Vietnam
It is beginning to remind me of Vietnam. The music was powerful.

6. that's Bruce's update of an old Pete Seeger song . . .
from the Vietnam era . . . the performance is from last Friday's Conan O'Brien Show . . .

"If you love your Uncle Sam
Bring 'em home, bring 'em home
Support our boys in Vietnam
Bring 'em home, bring 'em home."

7. I saw Bruce in concert twice this year
Edited on Sun Jun-25-06 10:27 AM by nuxvomica
I rarely go to concerts but I love his new album and so I saw him at the Tweeter Center in Mansfield, MA, and just last week at SPAC in Saratoga, NY. When he sings that song and the whole crowd joins in it makes a beautiful sound, let me tell you. He sings other anti-war songs as well as songs about the devastation of nature, prefaced with some criticism about the cronyism that let down the victims of Katrina, and the trials of the working man.
When the concert is over, they play "Down to the River to Pray" (by Allison Krause, I think) on the sound system as the concert goers walk en masse up the slopes of the lawn and after such an evening the crowd looked to me like the faithful at an old-fashioned revival. Not a Christian revival but a revival of old-time American values where hard work is a prayer and looking out for each other is a commandment. It filled me with hope.

10. I've heard people say that they don't like his concerts, these days, since
he plays none of the old songs that people look forward to and expect. I'm glad to hear that his new stuff is that good, as well. I'll have to make a point of hearing it... Thanks.:-)

13. He plays a few old ones
At the Tweeter Center there was one guy (in my row!) who kept shouting "Born!" and Bruce responded "Why don't you shut the fuck up". Thereafter, the guy would shout "Asshole!" at quite moments until some folks around him did something - I don't know what -- and he stopped. You could tell when he was playing an old song of his cuz you couldn't make out the lyrics. :D I don't think he did "Born to Run" at any venue on the tour in the US.

15. I think I would prefer the old tunes, since that's what I'm used to
and, as I said, this is the reason most people go to see him. He should respect that, while still playing some of his new stuff, instead of cursing out fans. That isn't going to get him anywhere.:-(

I only saw him in concert once, in 1980, I think, when my brother was in college and invited me. It was a pretty small venue and my ears rang for two days afterwards, LOL, but he put on a hell of a show...:woohoo:

17. The guy totally deserved it
BTW, I miswrote. The jerk was shouting "Run" not "Born". And I think he did it three times before Bruce told him to shut up.

19. So I guess that means he never played it.
I would have been disappointed too, since that's also one of my favorites. But I wouldn't be rude enough to hassle Bruce...

16. I agree with your idea about these concerts being a revival
I was at the concert venue formerly known as the Garden State Arts Center saturday night and it was one of the most wonderful, hopeful events I've ever been a part of. Bruce expresses the longing of Americans for an America that lives up to its values of work, community and caring like no one else.

18. "Mary Don't You Weep" has what I think is a hopeful line
When he sings "Pharoah's army was drownded" I'm thinking he's saying don't worry about how powerful the right wing is cuz they can't stop a towering wave. Of course, we have to be the wave. :D

9. There's a much less grainy version of that video on crooksandliars.com
and then go down to the June 23 CNN interview with Bruce - well worth listening to.

14. I saw this at C&L last night...
I'm getting the CD when I hit the store later.

I hope he keeps doing what he's doing. What a powerful tribute to our troops and a message to those who 'claim' to support the troops.
