A personal irritation concerning the flag
I'm no fan of desecration or commercialization of the flag in any context. If you want to burn in protest and then argue it's part of free speech, go ahead. I'll find the burning repulsive but, to me, my personal dislike should not get in the way of your right to be repulsive (just my opinion). However, don't ever get on a high horse about burning the flag and then...WEAR FUCKING FLAG LAPEL PINS. That cheapens the flag far more than any protestor burning it will ever do. Those who burn the flag in protest, generally, do so realizing that it is maybe the ultimate symbol of protest in this country and should be done accordingly. They at least treat it with some solemnity whereas morons who want to ban it have no fucking clue that the American flag is not a fucking accessory to your suit.

In the end, I ask for consistency. If you want to increase respect for the flag, start by ending the commercialization. Quit wearing the lapel pins, take it off shirt, quit pimping it in political signs, and, God Almighty, take it off the damned underwear. When I see the GOP arguing for this as loudly as they do for burning it, I might lose the ever-present temptation to just whip it out and piss in their faces.

Thanks for listening and have a nice day! :)

Good lyrics and a beat I can dance to.

Would like to add my pet peeve about zealous flag wavers: Get off the damn couch at sundown and take that flag down or get a spotlight on it!

6. Flag-burning was HONORING the flag.
It astounds me that so many completely miss the symbolism of this form of protest. Those patriotic Americans who burned the flag did so to indicate that our government had (in effect) SOILED the flag by global, imperialist predations. The approved way to dispose of a SOILED flag is to burn it.

It's no wonder that Establishment Politics together with the Corporatist Propagandists have turned their Mighty Wurlitzer on and addled the brains of the people - it's a form of protest against the power elite - the "ownership society" - specifically targeting the anti-democratic cabal that's been increasingly usurping power in this country at the expense of working people.

I've never yet engaged in flag-burning, but if that abominable amendment passes, I'll be doing so in front of my Congressman's office the same day. The LEAST human being's ciiivil liberties is far more important that a piece of cloth made in China.

8. if they ban flag-burning with a constitutional amendment-
why couldn't somebody just manufacture flags with 51 stars and 12 stripes, just for burning...?

to the average person, it would LOOK LIKE an american flag- but it wouldn't be.

also- what if somebody burns a newspaper that has a picture of the flag on it? is that desecration as well?
