Name one really talented, entertaining right-winger.
I wondered this as I watched The Daily Show (and now Colbert) and saw that Fox is planning a right-wing ripoff of TDS hosted by the utterly humorless Laura Ingraham.

So let's try this one. Be the devil's advocate and let's compile a list.

I'll go first, I'll admit that I always liked Patricia Heaton in Everybody Loves Raymond. And I have a soft spot for Schwarzenegger's movies (True Lies and Terminator are all-time classics).

Any others?

Drool. Drool. Drool.

Okay, you had to grow up watching Magnum. But women of a certain age understand.

22. He seems one-dimensional to me
Maybe he's good for TV, but I've always found him flat in movies. He either has one basic posture throughout, or he overacts when he tries to become more dramatic (like in Blue Steel). Seems like a style that might work on tv (never seen him on tv) and for minor roles, but not beyond that.

Could be wrong. Just my opinion. I like Tom Cruise, so I'm pretty much an idiot, anyway. :)

175. Not really...
Clint Eastwood got a reputation for being a right winger from the Dirty Harry movies suggesting that criminals don't need to go through due process, but that's not really how he stands. I believe he's an independent, but he starred and directed the anti-death penalty movie 'True Crime' and directed so many other films with left leaning messages: Mystic River, Million Dollar Baby, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil and A Perfect World to name a few. He may not be a Democrat, but he's certainly not a right winger.

Contrast that with hundreds (if not thousands) of liberals who entertain us every day.

There's a point here...I think really dyed-in-the-wool hardcore Republicans have no soul, and therefore can very rarely make others happy either.

32. I wouldn't say that.
Actually, I have said that, but I don't really believe it. I think that being a liberal requires the ability to see the possible, instead of just what you've been taught. That's a trait that lends itself to the entertainment industry. Conservatives are mechanical, prone to rigidly following rules, and think in black-and-white. That's not conducive to entertainment. Ergo, fewer conservative entertainers (and scholars).

I wouldn't accuse an entire group of people of not having souls. Just Bush and a few of his closest supporters. But I could be wrong. :)

He said (parapharasing) that Pukes have no souls and thus no empathy; because they have no empathy, they can't play anyone but themselves and therefore have no acting range. He gave Schwarzenegger, Fred Thompson, Reagan and Eastwood as examples.

but unfortunately they are blackened lumps of coal.

Most entertainers, when I hear they're Cons, it makes sense to me based on their body of work, and more often that not I didn't like them before I knew and less after.

Exceptions: Gary Oldman rules, and Kelsey Grammar is ok.

103. They do seem to have similar features
Conservative entertainers, I mean. They don't seem as artistic, and take roles that are more arrogant, more certain of everything, even when the film doesn't call for it. Their characters don't soul-search, or don't create anything resembling a real character. Much of literature is centered around characters changing in some ways as a result of the plot, yet conservative actors often seem to fit characters who don't change. I guess that's why there are so many action star conservatives.

Some exceptions. Bruce Willis has sharp timing and has played complex, weak, uncertain characters (twelve monkeys). Gary Oldman, of course. Clint Eastwood can direct, and he played a very unconservative character in Unforgiven. But Arnold, Ron Silver, Shannon Daugherty, Bo Derek, most of the people mentioned here, tend to play the types of roles where their character knows everything at the beginning, in the middle, and at the end, and doesn't change their perceptions one bit. That's not always bad--makes a great villain or action hero. Just not very artistic.

Except Mel Gibson. He always plays a neurotically insecure Hamlet sort.

Comedy is funny because it looks at the truth from a different honest perspective that makes us laugh.

twice in the article he did tonight on Limbaugh's latest troubles, Keith pointedly called him a "comedian," robbing him of any validity he may desire as a commentator but keeping well within Limbaugh's parameters for himself, since that's the label he hides behind when he's called out for his more outrageous comments.

152. Bill Maher is NOT a right-winger
His panels usually have I think 2 liberals and 1 poor hapless right-winger on, and the conservative almost always looks like a total fool. He's done interviews with Wes Clark, Barbara Boxer and a ton of other dems, and bashes Bush constantly. In fact, I think he bashes Bush the most of anyone I've seen on television - and he's a very intelligent, funny guy, who does his homework.

I don't agree with everything Bill Maher believes, but I agree with a LOT, and I have to say I think he goes even further on his show than Jon Stewart does on his - possibly because his show is an hour long.

He may have been in the 90's, but he sure isn't anymore. He seems pretty fearless, too. Sometimes I can't believe he actually said what he just said.

174. I was basing my opinion on what I saw in the late 90s
(I lived in the USA for a couple of years then). From all I've read online since, he certainly thinks Bush is an idiot. But when I saw him, I don't think he'd have advocated a government program as a solution to anything. Maybe he therefore looked right wing with a Democratic president in power - he'd be more likely to criticise something from the left when at least one part of government was in Democratic hands. He seemed more like a European 'liberal' - in favour of free trade, and personal freedom, but not a 'privatise everything' fanatic, I admit.

just for the record, he has a weekly show on Amazon.com called Fishbowl, or something like that. I'm not sure if he gets political or not, I only watched it once, and he briefly said something about trying very hard not to bash Bush. I would like to watch a few more when I have the time - they save all the past shows.

I miss his show - he's off until August, and it was kind of fun to see a wingnut get slammed every week on the panel! Why they agreed to appear, I'll never know.

Jed Clampett went to PA to help a republican win an election over Jane Hathaway?

So the repub candidate thought "The Beverly Hillbillies" was someow relevant to the campaign.

Did Ebsen reveal scandalous "behind the scenes" details of Jane Hathaway?

This is the kind of stuff that makes me think the country is doomed.

149. Sad but true
"In 1984 (Nancy) Kulp, who had long been interested in politics and campaigned in support of other candidates, made her own bid for public office. Having settled on a farm in Port Royal, Pennsylvania, near her hometown, she ran as a Democrat for the United States House of Representatives in the state's Ninth District against a Republican who had already held the seat for twelve years.

"During the campaign Kulp's former Beverly Hillbillies co-star Buddy Ebsen made a radio commercial calling her "too liberal for Pennsylvania" and endorsing her opponent. Kulp was incensed, complaining that the Californian Ebsen knew nothing about Pennsylvania politics, and stating that she "was speechless at such a betrayal, and something so needless and cruel."

62. Jennifer Love-Hewitt and Sara Michelle Gellar? Oh, nooooo ...
tell me it isn't so!

Seriously, though, I question that list. A lot of them ARE obvious right-wingers, like Mel Gibson, Patricia Heaton, and Drew Carey. Some of them are nutjobs, such as Tom Cruise and Dennis Hopper. Others are right of center, but not necessarily wingnuts, e.g., Eastwood. A couple are just stupid: Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson.

A few on the list are liberal, I heard, or at least not conservatives, such as Faith Hill, Tom Brady, Lance Armstrong. I read that Faith Hill is liberal like her husband Tim McGraw. I also heard that Brady, who is from the San Francisco Bay Area, is a Democrat who campaigned for Kerry. Although Lance took a bike ride with *, I doubt he's a right-winger and have heard he's left of center. And wasn't Earnhardt recommending that everyone see "Fahrenheit 911"?

On the other hand, as for sports, it would be better to make a list of those who are NOT Pukes. The list of outward liberals wouldn't be a very long list: Brady, Bill Walton, Kyle Orton, Adam Morrison (Gonzaga hoop), Heath Shuler, Dean Smith, Michael Jordan, Bill Bradley ...

I guess liberal predomination in the entertainment world is canceled out by conservative dominace in the sports world.

185. Trey Parker and Matt Stone are pretty sarcastic about everything...
Yeah, they made fun of hollywood liberals by name and face in Team America, but they made fun of conservative ideology in more subtle ways; showing the "good guys" blowing up entire towns to root out one bad guy, blatantly stereotypical portrayals of Muslims and the Middle East, the lyrics to the song "America, Fuck yeah!" etc. And they have a beef with Michael Moore because they claim he ripped off Southpark's animation style for a scene in Bowling for Columbine, so that's why they portrayed him that way...not saying that they're right, just that their problem with MM is personal/professional, not political.

I'm not saying they're great guys or brilliant or anything, but I don't think they belong on a list of RWers, nor do a lot of people I see written there...I'd question the criteria for being included on that list upthread, but I really don't care about the political persuasion of celebrities in the first place, one way or the other.

similar to this, and it turns out that some of those mentioned were "branded" conservative because at one time in an interview they mentioned that they supported the troops....like that makes you a freeper, and it was done more to be APOLITICAL than to actually have a point of view.

105. some of the names on that list are bogus
Faith Hill, for one, is a well known demcorat who campaigned (along with her husband tim mcgraw) for john kerry and was outspoken in her post-katrina criticism.

Tom Cruise, while perhaps insane, isn't a repub, and supported hillary's senate campaign in 2000.

A few of the other names might be suspicious as well.

I once ran across a right-wing website that had a simlar list of "republican" notables, and the justification they had for some of the names were really funny. Like if somebody made a comment about supporting the troops, they must be a republican :)

130. Interesting, If you had just listed the names without listing their
political leanings, I still would have considered all of them no-talent ass clowns (in the actor category.) Another thing I have noticed is that I find every single one of the men listed extremely creepy in a skeezy way (not in a "talented at being creepy in a film" way.) They all make my skin crawl.

I don't like sports, and don't pay attention to them, but I must say I am extremely disappointed in Tiger Woods. I thought he was better than that.

106. I don't see the villification(sp) of Elia Kazan to be a wrong thing
He took part in an imaginary witchhunt that resulted in a lot of good writers and entertainers losing their livelihood for the sake of his own personal gain. Behind a lot of these political shifts, there's usually something more base and childish, i.e., Frank Sinatra's defection, or when Dennis Miller lashed out because he couldn't get arrested in Hollywood.

FYI... his movie, 'On The Waterfront' was Kazan's attempt justification re: what he did (naming names) and why he did it. Next time you see it, keep that context in mind when watching the Brando scenes and you'll see a dimension of the film you've probably never noticed before... at least, that's what happened to me.

I'm pretty sure she's a Republican, but she's publicly come out as pro-choice.
She does hang with poppy Bush, but on the good side, he does alot of her charity celeb tournaments. And at least she had the good sense to reject poppy trying to set her up with dimson back in the day.
She does an insane amount of charity work, she started the Chris Evert Children's Hospital down in south Florida. Not very Republican-like.

141. A few
Definately Kelsey Grammer and Clint Eastwood. Arguably Charlton Heston and Arnold Schwartznegger; "talented and entertaining" is debateable in both those cases, but I think probably justified.

I've never seen any of Ronald Reagan's films, so I don't know if they're any good or not.

I've heard good things about Matt Stone and Trey Parker, although I've never seen either "South Park" or "Team America".

If you extend the list to writers, especially dead ones, it becomes far, far longer: Kipling, Elliot, Pound, Tennyson, Wodehouse, Rider Haggard, Stoppard, and countless others.

Come to that, the one thing I've admired about George W. Bush is his jokes; "need any wood" was inspired, and I would be surprised if at least some of the more famous Bushisms (misunderestimate, where wings take dream, and so forth) were not deliberate. If he had been running for the job of standup comedian, as opposed to president of America, I would have backed him wholeheartedly.

I don;t know where George Baily would stnd in today's f'd up political climate, but in the 60's and 70's he was among the cranky old conservative crowd along with the Duke, Bob Hope, etc.

169. I have found right wingers to be most entertaining when they
Edited on Wed Jun-28-06 02:01 PM by Vinnie From Indy
come face to face with their own hypocrisy. Nothing like watching someone get a dose of their own medicine. For example, all the right wingers that puff up and bellow about Smirky's right to monitor their phone calls for terrorist activity will one day be hilarious when their Little Johnny gets busted on a huge dope deal because the police were monitoring Little Johhny's email and phone calls.

186. Dolly Parton
How can you sing "Coat of Many Colors" like she does, and vote Republican?

It broke my heart. :(

and Lorretta Lynn :(

she's turned fundy!

Ms. Lynn, the country singer, who described herself as a longtime friend and admirer of Mr. Bush and of his father, was for her part distressed over the nation's moral decline--a condition exemplified, she made clear, by the kiss the vice president planted on his wife at the convention. As Ms. Lynn put it, in her own lyrical fashion, "Morals in this country is so bad right now that if George Bush don't get in--I'm telling you . . ." Ms. Lynn did not elaborate further on the bleak future to come, but went on to declare pointedly that George W. Bush didn't get up on a convention stage and do what Al Gore did with his wife.

"There's a place to kiss and a place not to," said Ms. Lynn.

He jumped the shark when he turned repub though. Now he has left radio to become an actor. I predict he will wind up like Dennis Miller.

Without question, he's created more television entertainment than any right wing
entertainer out there, bar none. Thousands of hours of television and film, of
music and books, the most entertaining pastime of a half century, pouring judgement
down on the german mistake we're repeating; just to show entertainment is not
education.

and Ben Stein. Of Stein, I love his type of humor. Loved "Win Ben Stein's Money" and just like his deadpan style. Robert Duvall and Gary Sinise are both brillian actors. As is James Woods.
