Michael Berg running for Congress?
Edited on Tue Jun-27-06 09:56 AM by RagingInMiami
Don't know how recent this is, but I just received this e-mail from this South Florida activist e-mail group.

I am writing to you today because the Green Party needs our help now.

Many of you know me as the father of Nick Berg. Nick was seeking a government contract in Iraq for his young radio tower service company. He was kidnapped and brutally murdered in retaliation for the murders, rapes and torture of Iraqis in the Abu Graib prison. Since that awful moment, I have taken every opportunity to work to end the war that took my son from us. Two days after we got the terrible news, I told the media who had surrounded our home, “Nicholas Berg died for the sins of George Bush & Donald Rumsfeld”.

I wish I had taken much more personal responsibility for this war much earlier. Maybe one death could have been prevented and maybe that life saved could even have been my son's; or, Al Zappla's son Sherwood who was killed while serving as an escort for American inspectors searching for the mythical weapons of mass destruction; or, maybe the life of one of the tens upon tens of thousands of Iraqi civilians who have been killed.

You may not know that I have decided to continue my campaign for peace by running for US Congress. Ending this illegal and immoral war is my top campaign issue. We need to bring the troops home now.

Peace candidates do not grow on trees- they best grow from the peace movement. But a great candidate is not enough, and even money is not enough. What candidates need and what the peace movement needs is an institution, an electoral arm of the movement that is serious about making US Congress a House of Peace.

I've decided to take personal political responsibility for democracy and peace by running as a Green. I have discovered that the Green Party offers the best chance we have to build the electoral arm of the peace movement. You simply will not find a political party with a better record of pursuing peace, building the peace movement, and demanding an end to wars of aggression.

Building institutions outside the limits of conventional thinking can be a grueling job. I'm writing to ask you to join me in supporting the women & men who are working so diligently to make sure that we have the Green Party that we need as the voice, the platform, and the ballot line for the peace movement.

With your help, we can make these goals a reality! Please consider sending a donation of $100, $250, or more to the Green Party of the United States. Of course, any amount you send will be greatly appreciated. Please give generously.

Sincerely,

Michael Berg

1. You can see his interview on Democracy Now! and other news sources
CNN, FOX have already attacked him quite harshly.

3. I'm having a tough time voting for Michael Berg, which is why I won't
On one hand the worst thing that could happen is we're stuck another 2 years with a moderate republican who I agree with his stances on choice & environment but not much else.

But on the other hand I get irriated with people who aren't voting democrat because of 1 or 2 key issues and thus enabling a republican win again.

Spivak has shown some life as a democrat but in this race it won't take a whole lot to show life compared to previous candidates.

But ultimately I have to uphold my standard of voting for what is best for the democratic party and that would be voting for Spivak. Berg could have run on the democratic ticket but chose to go Green.

I'm a democrat, I vote democrat and although I considered voting for Berg, I realize that I would be a hypocrite of my own stance on getting the democratic majority
