Fighter Jets Collide Over Central Calif.

- Two Navy fighter jets collided in midair Monday and started a fire on a military base, authorities said. It was unclear whether there were casualties.

The F/A-18 jets from Lemoore Naval Air Station were flying a training mission when they crashed at Fort Hunter Liggett, a remote Army Reserve base 150 miles south of San Francisco, said Navy spokesman Dennis McGrath.

Two fire engines were sent to battle the blaze, but the extent of the fire was not immediately clear, a state fire spokesman said.

The Naval Air Station supplies all the fighter jets to Navy ships off the West Coast and serves as a training site for F/A-18s. Dozens of fighters rotate to and from aircraft carriers per month.

The F/A-18C ``Hornet'' is a McDonnell-Douglas single-seat fighter jet that can reach a speed of 1,190 mph.

2. 1 Pilot Dies, 1 Hurt
:(

The F18-C Hornet jets from Lemoore Naval Air Station were practicing dogfighting maneuvers at about 11:15 a.m. when they crashed above Fort Hunter Liggett, a remote Army Reserve base 150 miles south of San Francisco, said Navy spokesman Dennis McGrath.

3. Pilot dies during 'dogfight' exercise
Two Navy fighter jets went down on a central coast military base, killing one pilot, and injuring another.

It happened shortly after 11 a.m. on Monday at Fort Hunter Liggett, a few miles from Nacimiento-Ferguson Road. The Army command post is in Monterey County about 25 miles southwest of King City.

Military officials confirmed that the planes were FA-18-C fighter jets that took off from the Lemoore Naval Air Station, which is near Fresno.

Navy officials said there was one person in each plane. One pilot died in the accident, and the other is in good condition.

4. Would you rather we have slow planes and fly slow in practice?
You need to practice for combat. Accidents happen.

6. They don't "Dogfight" at 1000mph
The speed is used for pursuit; to get from here to there quickly. The average speed during a dogfight (and true dogfights are rare with modern fighters) is much much slower because of the high G-loading the pilots experience

7. Faith-based engineering--that's my guess!
If you have greedy assholes running the government, and toadies and yes-men in the military doing their bidding, and scientists and engineers unable to speak the truth, you not only have unnecessary accidents, you have the entire country and its military on a "crash and burn" course.

Next we'll hear "pilot error." Uh-huh. From the people who brought us the Iraq war, the end of the UCMJ, the Geneva Conventions, and the U.S. Consitution with the torture of prisoners, and a $10 trillion deficit. Quality people.

Whatever they say, don't believe it. Because you can count on it being a load of bu-u-u-u-u-u-u-u-ull!
