20. I think he's what a journalist is supposed to be - "neutral."

Matthews is a Moderate Democrat. I'm personally endeared to him after this evenings show. I appreciate Hardball as well, though I don't always agree with Matthews.

Remember - Matthews was against the Iraq war from the get go, that was considered a "bold" position at one time.

They're simply supposed to not give opinion.

Matthews gives opinions. He just contradicts himself constantly.

That guy at the party that spitting vodka in your face as he talks, every now and then letting loose an obnoxious guffaw that causes everyone else to stop their conversations for a moment and look over to see if you're all right.

The clincher, after playing his "nice guy" bullshit routine, was saying that a democratic House would not be good for America. Not that I ever thought his non-partisan act had any legitimacy.

C'mon gang, he spoke against the war, said we create terrorists and all we can do is pick apart his back-tracking when he said we'd take back the house?

I'm not going to spend the evening defending Matthews, but he said he wishes to appear neutral. That's not a bad thing for a journalist to do.

35. That was NOT his point
His statement about it not being good for America was uncalled for if his intent was NOT to take sides.

You are giving him much too much benefit of the doubt here. Were we watching the same show?

Had his intent been not to take sides, he would have given his prediction without the addition of the back hand slap of his parting comment.

44. No, it's not.

The statement he made was made in an attempt to remain neutral.

"I think Democrats will take back the house, but that would be bad for america" is a vastly different statement than "I think Democrats will pick up the house, (while catching himself he quickly stated) NOT that that would be good for America, I don't want to take sides or anything."

"Not that that would be a good thing" is a neutral clarification.

Let's assume he said the following.

"I think Republicans will retain the house in 06, not that that would be a bad thing for America, I don't want to take sides here."

Both statements are neutral.

I don't know what CM thinks about Democrats taking back the house, but his statement this evening was neutral IMO.

I'm logging off for the evening. Good night.

"Not that that's either good or bad for America or not as it were." He followed by "I don't want to take sides." The entire quote should be examined.

Adding additional unnecessary words does not change the meaning.

Chris Matthews was opposed to the war, suggesting he'd rather not have the dems with subpoena power to investigate pre-war intel is curious.

Again, I found his statement was neutral, and deliberately so.

29. Right with the original comment "Democrats are going to take back the
house." And "Bush is in a free fall since 911." And, "the war was a mistake."

I came away with a different impression than many of you did. I gathered that Chris Matthews is a moderate Democrat who thinks Republicans will pay a political price for the war - now that America has awakened.

50. I must have heard it wrong
since everyone else seems to have heard what you did.

I thought I heard him say he thought it would be good for America. (and then saying he didn't want to take sides)

I doubt everyone else heard it wrong...I checked on a Kos thread too and they heard what you said.
But I'll still need to watch it again to be sure.

Maybe I heard wrong because sometimes we hear what we expect to hear. He has said on his show he thinks we'll take the House and that he thinks even some Republicans would like that to happen, that we have no checks and balances and what that leads to.

I don't like him except on the CIA leak case (he's been great there) and the build up to war, so I'm not speaking as a fan, just as someone who evidently listen well enough.

49. Colbert did a masterful job
He wrestled around with tweety and let tweety win the match. Tweety was feeling all warm and fuzzy. Then he got Tweety to say his real thoughts--"The Dems will take the house and that will not necessary be good for America." He disarmed Tweety and went for the jugular. At the end he said quietly that Tweety had just taken sides. Tweety was still basking in the warm glow of his victory and missed it.

Cat's out of bag, Tweety!
