Poll question: Soldiers fight to protect _______.
Edited on Tue Jun-27-06 10:44 PM by originalpckelly
The President & the Republicans in Congress say we are fighting the "War on Terror" to protect life, and that we must sacrifice civil liberties to protect our lives. "What good are your civil liberties if you are dead?"

What do you think soldiers fight to protect?

10. Wait a second...
What they enlist to fight for or what they are USED to fight for?

It seems the mood of the board has swung for the prior, yet I picked the former.

9. Old Military Saying:
Taught to enlisted men and women, who have to serve under some wonderful and some horribly stupid officers: "Salute the uniform, not the occupant."

12. There once was a Colonel...
Edited on Tue Jun-27-06 10:56 PM by misternormal
... who was a Battalion Commander... He used to hang his uniform coat on a coat rack in the corner of his office. When summoned to his office, you would report, and then turn and salute the coat on the rack that contained his rank insignia.

As young soldiers this was lost on some until he explained that it was the eagle on his shoulder that was to be saluted, not him.

5. Other
TO some extent, they protect our civil liberties from other countries, but at the same times are protecting our lives at the same time. If an enemy were to invade, they would kill. If a new foreign government were to come to power, they might take away civil liberties. But I really don't think the military do anything except killinnocent civilians.

7. I would imagine, some fight to
protect innocent lives
some to protect their buddy's along side of them from dying
as a way to provide for their own families
some may fight to protect their own lives
some may fight cause they like to fight, which is why they enlisted
some may fight as a sense of honor and duty to country
some may fight to seek revenge
some may fight to play with big guns
some may fight because they didn't expect to actually have to go to war but now have to fight

My guess is, it's different for each person.

11. Soldiers fight for reasons given, or not given, to them.
They fight on the orders, and assumed copetence, of their leaders, and, if lucky, the persistent will of a public that pays attention.

Soldiers fight for what they're told to fight for.

Not thier choice why.

I think.

Bottom line, fuck bush and his blood-spilling games.

14. Depends totally on the war and the context.
What was fought for in WWII, and what was fought for in Vietnam, for example- couldn't be more different.

I'd say, assuming we're talking about US Soldiers... for the last forty years or so at least, the answer to that question would (with a few exceptions) have to be "Empire".

25. Correct answer: The US Constitution & the liberties it protects.
I DO SOLEMNLY SWEAR (OR AFFIRM) THAT I WILL SUPPORT AND DEFEND THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES AGAINST ALL ENEMIES, FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC; THAT I WILL BEAR TRUE FAITH AND ALLEGIANCE TO THE SAME; AND THAT I WILL OBEY THE ORDERS OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES AND THE ORDERS OF THE OFFICERS APPOINTED OVER ME, ACCORDING TO REGULATIONS AND THE UNIFORM CODE OF MILITARY JUSTICE. SO HELP ME GOD.
