My husband doesn't think it's any big deal to pass the flag ammendment!
He was a boy scout, and an eagle scout! I asked him if he remembered the only way to honorably destroy a tettered flag was to "burn it in it's own fire." He said no, don't remember that.

I wasn't a girl scout, but I remember being taught that for years in grade school!

He just asked me what's all this BS about burning the flag? I explained the ammendment vote, and why it was in the news. When I said "ammend the Constitution" for this, he said "Yea, so what?"

ARRRRGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!

I've convinced him that Shrubco is an idiot, and the Pubs need to get thrown out of office, but how many other people feel the same as he does?

1. It is in the news because it is a GOP wedge issue
IMO it is best to ignore it.

10. Oh I agree, but I'm asking if HE feels this way, I suspect many other
voters do too! That's why I'm concerned that many americans simply don't see this as a big deal!

2. So I was in court yesterday and a lawyer was reading the paper
in our conference room and commenting on the idiocy of the flag burning amendment. I was quite pleased to hear this. Then he went on to say that congress should be dealing with illegal immigration and that the border patrol should be allowed to shoot border crossers on site as should the police when they tell someone to stop and they don't! :eyes: :silly: Of course a lively debate ensued

Ask him what he cherishes more, the 1st Amend or a piece of cloth.
Also, you can Google Boy Scout flag destruction protocols to find the link to the official Boy Scout guidelines. You are right about how flags are supposed to be destroyed.

3. It is a big deal
and its another step. If they were successful in passing this amendment, what would be next? The goal of "christian conservatives" in this country is to replace the constitution with the bible and they are intent on destroying the constitution one amendment at a time.

4.  What the neocons hope for: 'See, change Constitution = no biggie'
So then, the idea of other changes to that instrument which defines our democracy are easier to sell. They want people to just shrug and not see that it affects their daily lives. Then they can slip in some fine print on some more amendments.

All about conditioning the public into not paying close attention, while wrapping themselves in the flag, literally.

6. This is just the latest smoke and mirrors tactic from the GOP, designed
to conceal the true issues and events. They don't want the media to have to dig for news stories, because they might have to report on things the GOP would prefer to have buried: things like the war in Iraq, the deficit, the growing number of Americans living in poverty, jobs being outsourced, the President's illegal signing statements, the corruption in the GOP, DeLay, Abramoff, Frist and the SEC, Cunningham, Ney, the lies we were told leading to the war in Iraq, etc.

They will drag out anything to take the focus of the real issues, so look for more gay marriage, immigration, flag burning, etc., topics in the future.

It's all just bullshit from the masters of bullshit: the Nazis GOP.

7. I was a boy scout as well and the TWO ways to dispose
Edited on Wed Jun-28-06 09:40 AM by MemphisTiger
of a flag was to burn it or bury it. We never did either since they are quite expensive. He was an eagle scout and doesn't remember that? That's one of the first things they teach as a boy scout.

11. I just told him he was smacked down on the net!
At least it made him stop in his stride ans say "WHAT?"

I remember that very well from grade school, and I wonder why the opponents of this BS haven't used that argument against the supporters?

8. Restricting inidividual rights
is what it's all about, and the contstitution is supposed to expand them.

The amendment restricts individual rights agains those of the state. Put it that way. It's not cloth against paper, it's people against the state.

Remind him that the last time the state tried to use the constitution to do that, it resulted in Prohibition. Ask him how well that one worked.

Oh, and you might want to rub his nose in that flag disposal thing again. That's hilarious for an Eagle Scout.

9. This will also be the FIRST time in our nation's history we have
attempted to enshrine the RESTRICTION of the 1st Amendment right to free speech in the Constitution.
