Putin orders Russian Special Forces to Iraq
President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday ordered Russia’s special services to hunt down and “destroy” the killers of four Russian diplomats in Iraq, the Kremlin said.

Nikolai Patrushev, the head of the Federal Security Service — the main successor to the Soviet KGB — later said that everything would be done to ensure that the killers “do not escape from responsibility,” the Interfax news agency reported.

“The president has ordered the special forces to take all necessary measures to find and destroy the criminals who killed Russian diplomats in Iraq,” the Kremlin press service said in a brief statement.

1. Oh, this is going to be interesting
And furthermore, I don't see how this is going to end well for anybody. Hopefully Bush's cozy relationship with Putin will prevent any ugliness should things go haywire. This has "international incident" written all over it.

2. We don't have a cozy relationship with Putin.
It's all public relations.

Mother Jones has a good article this month on all the ways we've been backstabbing Russia, breaking our promises, and backing Putin into a corner.

6. If Putin's not "playing nice" I'd like to know how.
He's president of a collapsed country in absolute chaos. I'm not sure he's got much practical power to do much to us.

5. Wow
Just imagine the spectacle, when hit-squads from the KGB (or whatever the hell they're calling themselves these days) start piling up bodies all over Iraq. For some reason, I don't envision them being particularly surgical about it. Message: you no longer have to be an American proxy or jihadist to indulge in the live-fire/live-target shooting gallery formerly known as Iraq.

8. Russian special forces operating covertly in and out of U.S.
occupied Iraq as well as in insurgent controlled terrain in close proximity to both U.S. forces and so called insurgents? Sounds like a GREAT idea. What could possibly go wrong? :sarcasm:
